We now provide a selection of databases (sources of journal articles and ebooks) for Virginia Tech alumni. While most databases are licensed solely for current students and faculty, these select databases, combined with our list of free, scholarly databases and licensed databases from your public library, provide a wealth of academic, consumer, and business publications and data.

Ebooks have dramatically changed the publishing business and access to scholarship at Virginia Tech. In October of 2012, the library adopted an ebook acquisition policy that states ebooks are our preferred format for monographs (books), much as we've been adding online journals to our collections for a decade.

Newman Library has long had more than books to check out: videos and DVDs, music CDs, 35mm slides, play scripts, and music scores. Last summer we started circulating electronic equipment: laptops, iPads, digital cameras, mini video projectors, calculators, and digital voice recorders.

This time of year, we're aware of natural disasters like hurricanes and tornados and the damage they can do to our historical documents, books, and family photos. But it doesn't take a natural disaster to affect these documents; a broken pipe or a window left open during a summer storm can be just as detrimental. Depending on the extent of damage, you can restore many of the materials yourself. Here are some basic tips for dealing with your water or fire-damaged papers and memorabilia.
