Circulation/Reserve policies
General collection and special collection materials
A valid Hokie Passport or Virginia state driver's license or identification card is required to check out library materials. Patrons may pay fines, update their borrower's record, renew books, and pick-up hold/recall items at the Circulation/Reserve desk. While students, faculty and staff of Virginia Tech are the primary users of the library, the general public is also invited to borrow and make use of library resources. In general, the Art + Architecture Library closely follows Newman Library policies for borrowing privileges.
Some exceptions apply to special materials located at the Art + Architecture Library, such as slides and architecture plans. Consult the following tables for information regarding the load periods of different materials for your patron type. Also see our separate page on iPad loan policies.
Library accounts will be blocked when fines reach $20.00.
Damaged books beyond repair will be assessed the Books in Print price, or if out of print, the charge will be the default price of $75.00, with a $20.00 non-refundable processing fee. If the damaged book can be rebound, a rebinding fee of $25.00 will be charged.
Refunds for lost books returned after the payment is received will only be issued for one year (365 days) from the date of payment, minus the non-refundable processing fee.

Course Reserves at the Art + Architecture Library
Locating reserve material
Reserve materials are listed online in Addison. Instructors may also have course materials online.
Reserve policies
- Reserve items may be designated to circulate for periods of 2 hours, 2 days, 7 days, or 14 days.
- Reserve items may be renewed three times unless requested by another patron.
- Patrons may have three reserve items checked out at one time.
- Reserve items may also be checked out overnight two hours before closing and will be due one hour after the library opens the next day.
- A valid I.D. (e.g. Hokie Passport, drivers license, etc) is needed to check out reserve items.
Reserve fines
- 2 hour checkouts: $1.00 per hour or fraction of an hour, per item.
- 2 day checkouts: $1.00 per day, per item.
