All electronic equipment must be returned by 7:30pm on Friday, May 17 to undergo maintenance and updates. They will be available for check-out on Tuesday, May 28.
Newman Library provides a variety of electronics and accessories for current faculty, staff, and students. Library patrons who do not meet these criteria will not have borrowing privileges for these materials. For further information on patron types, please visit our borrowing page.
- Equipment may only be checked out by current Virginia Tech students, faculty, and staff with a valid Hokie Passport and a library account in good standing.
- An Equipment Loan Form must be read and signed each time a piece of equipment is checked out. Patrons cannot borrow equipment under another patron's name.
- Equipment MUST be inspected for proper working condition before being checked in and removed from patron's account. Until the item is inspected, a patron cannot check out any other equipment.
- Only one piece of equipment may be checked out on a patron's account at a time.
- If an electronic equipment item has been billed to the bursar for non-return and then returned to the library, a processing fee charge of 20% of the cost of the item will be applied to the patron fees. This processing fee is in addition to the overdue fees.
- Equipment must be returned no less than 30 minutes before the end of the operating day or be fined as an overdue item.

You may only have either one iPad or one laptop checked out on your account at one time. Equipment may not be checked out between the hours of 12 midnight and 7:30 am.

- Fines are assessed to the borrower’s library account, and may result in restrictions on your library account and at the Office of the University Bursar.
- All equipment is to be returned to the Circulation Desk in Newman Library; items cannot be returned to other branches or campus return bins.
- All equipment is to be returned no less than 30 minutes before the end of the operating day or else be fined as an overdue item.
- Equipment working condition will be inspected before checkout and upon its return. Borrowers are responsible for damage to and/or loss or theft of all components. Users are required to report any problems experienced with the equipment during the loan period to Newman Library Circulation.
- In the event this equipment is destroyed or lost you are responsible for immediately notifying Newman Library Circulation.
- If the damaged item is under warranty, repair/replacement fees will be assessed on an individual basis.
- If stolen you are responsible for immediately notifying Newman Library Circulation and your local Police Department.
- If an item becomes 5 days overdue, it will be considered lost, and the borrower will be charged for its replacement, in addition to a $20.00 processing fee.
- Computers will have security seals that should not be removed or tampered with while on loan. If the item is returned without the seal intact the borrower will be charged a $20 processing fee and may be responsible of replacement costs.
- You will be responsible for replacement costs of the equipment if it is deemed jail-broken upon return.
- Missing, damaged, and/or lost cables, earphones, cases, and other supplemental items will be assessed replacement charges, in addition to a $20.00 processing fee.
- If an electronic equipment item has been billed to the bursar for non-return and then returned to the library, a processing fee charge of 20% of the cost of the item will be applied to the patron fees. This processing fee is in addition to the overdue fees.
- Laptops and iPads are pre-loaded with a folder of sample files and applications, but users may sync additional data and applications, with the understanding that all data added by the borrower will be erased when the laptop or iPad is returned to Circulation. It is the borrower's responsibility to save files to a USB flash drive or other memory device.
- Any additional applications or media purchased by the borrower, and loaded to the laptop or iPad, must be purchased by the borrower, and is not the responsibility of the Library.
Replacement costs for damaged or lost computer or digital equipment and/or accessories will be assessed to patrons' library accounts along with a $20.00 processing fee.

Any of the equipment below can be used by providing a valid form of ID to the Circulation/Reserve Desk.
Video
Two stations are available for viewing library-owned or personal DVDs or VHS tapes.These stations are set up for viewing in groups of up to 4 patrons to watch videos for educational purposes. (See the group viewing policy.)
Both stations are also equipped to play PAL (the European/Asian VHS/DVD format) videos.
Audio
One listening station is available for compact discs, audiocassettes and phonorecords. Headphones (for use with our listening stations or public computers) are available for checkout at the Circulation Desk.
Classroom Audio/Visual Services lends video projectors, audio/PA systems, overhead projectors, movie projectors, slide projectors, screens, tape recorders, CD players, DVD players/VCRs, and other accessories to faculty, staff, and authorized graduate students for academic purposes.
