General information


Established in 1872 with 500 volumes, the library now includes holdings of more than 2 million volumes physically located in Newman Library and the branch libraries:


Library Hours


During fall and spring semesters Newman Library opens Sunday morning at 9:00 am and is open continuously until Friday evening at 8:00 pm.  Saturday hours are 9:00 am to 8:00 pm.


Library hours will vary during summer, breaks, and times of inclement weather; please visit the library web page for current hours.


Branch library and Special Collections hours are different from Newman Library.  Please check the branch library and Special Collections web pages for available hours.


Materials that do not circulate


Some materials are meant for use in the library only and do not circulate. These include:

  • Reference books in the Reference and General Collections (labeled with REF before the call number on the spine)
  • Current periodicals (current journals, magazines, newspapers, etc.)
  • US Bureau of Census publications, maps, and microforms
  • Most items in Special Collections (these are labeled "Spec Use Only")
  • Certain other materials usually labeled "Item does not Circulate" and appear as "Lib Use Only" in the library database
