Lost or damaged items

If a book is returned damaged to the Library, the Circulation/Reserve unit assesses the damage sustained. A decision will be made if the book can be repaired or must be replaced. Patrons will be notified of any damage and the repair/replacement price will be added to the patron's account.

The standard replacement fee for books is $75.00 plus a $20.00 non-refundable processing fee. The library reserves the right to charge the actual value of the book as listed on Amazon.

It is a class 1 misdemeanor to willfully or wantonly destroy library property.

Materials lost by the patron will also be assessed the standard replacement fee of $75.00 and a $20.00 non-refundable processing charge. The fines will be added to the patron's library account. Unpaid fees will be turned over to Accounts Receivable at the Bursar's office in the Student Services building.

Patrons who lose University Libraries materials have the option to either pay the replacement price or purchase a replacement copy themselves (same title and author, same or newer edition and in good condition) and pay only the $20.00 processing fee.

If a patron subsequently finds the lost item within six months of the payment date and returns it in good condition, the University Libraries will give a refund of the replacement price minus the $20.00 processing fee. For example, if a patron paid the default replacement price of $95.00 ($75.00 replacement fee and $20.00 processing fee), the library would issue a refund of the $75.00. The $20.00 processing fee is non-refundable.

If a patron subsequently finds and returns a lost item after purchasing a replacement copy and paying the $20.00 processing fee, the original lost item will be kept by the library. No refunds will be made for the $20.00 processing fee, nor will the purchased replacement item be returned to the patron.
