How to check out material

Checking out a book or other material from Newman or a branch library is easy. First, you'll need to retrieve the item from the stacks; we do not offer a service to pull items for you unless they are located in our remote storage facility. Then bring that material along with your Hokie Passport (or borrower's card, if not affiliated with Virginia Tech) to the circulation desk.

Check out services are available any time the library is open.

You can ask for a receipt at checkout listing each item on its due date. You can also log on to My Library Account to list everything you have checked out, see any requested items waiting for you to pick up, and renew any items that are close to being due.

Materials that do not circulate

Some materials are meant for use in the library only and do not circulate. These include:

  • Reference books (labeled with REF before the call number on the spine)
  • Current periodicals (current journals, magazines, newspapers, etc.)
  • US Bureau of Census publications, maps, and microforms
  • Most items in Special Collection (these are labeled "Spec Use Only" in Addison)
  • Certain other materials usually labeled "Item Does Not Circulate" and appear as "Lib Use Only" in Addison

Newman Circulation chat is currently unavailable.

For any questions relating to your library account, please supply your full name and Hokie Passport number (or library card number).
