IMechE Proceedings Archive 1847-1996

The IMechE Proceedings Archive 1847-1996 gives you direct access to over 200,000 pages of unique material, including technical papers, obituaries, meeting reports, technical drawings, and editorial comment, all covering some of the most influential and innovative years of engineering development.

The Proceedings of the IMechE commenced in 1847, at the height of Victorian technological prowess, and continues today as a multi-part refereed journal devoted to all aspects of mechanical engineering science and practice. This internationally respected journal is the Archive's key resource. Two journals that had earlier incarnations as periodicals outside of the Proceedings of the IMechE, of which they are now a part, are also included in the Archive.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has grown in size and influence over the years and sister societies have joined with it at different times. Therefore the collection includes The Proceedings of the Institution of Automobile Engineers (1906 - 1947) and The Journal of the Institution of Locomotive Engineers (1912 - 1969). Additionally, international conferences held by the IMechE 1964 - 1970 were given proceedings status and have been included in the Archive.

The history of the Proceedings of the IMechE is, understandably for such a well established publication, quite complicated. To assist users a timeline (PDF file) has been produced that represents, in an easy to follow format, the publishing history of this prestigious title.

Papers in the Archive include:

  • The employment of women in munition factories (Olive E Monkhouse, 1918)
  • Modern machine method (H F L Orcutt, 1902)
  • Electrification of the railways (J A F Aspinall, 1908)

The Archive has over 2,500 obituaries of engineers and entrepreneurs from 1847 through to more recent times including:

  • George Stephenson (1741 - 1848)
  • Sir Joseph Whitworth (1803 - 1887)
  • Sir Charles William Siemens (1823 - 1883)

The Archive includes a unique collection of superb engineering drawings, some measuring 100cm x 72cm. These have been carefully digitized so that they can now be viewed online for the very first time.
