Statistics

Statement of programs and library needs

The Department of Statistics offers an undergraduate program leading to the B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The undergraduate major in statistics is particularly strong and has a national reputation. The department participates in an interdepartmental program leading to a Ph.D. degree emphasizing environmental engineering statistics and also offers an option in Forestry and Wildlife in conjunction with the College of Forestry and Wildlife Resources.

Statistics courses are offered to prepare students for the professions in statistics and for students who need statistic tools to engage in scientific research.

E. Languages

F. Treatment

Strong emphasis is on materials of a scholarly nature. This includes serial publications such as journals; monographs, and books in series; as well as data compilations. Upper level and graduate level texts, reference works and conference proceedings are purchased selectively. Selection efforts attempt to address the differing needs of various academic disciplines, which vary with the kinds of data available in each discipline and the statistical tests which are appropriate to those data, and the differing needs of patrons depending on their level of statistical expertise.

G. Formats

Primarily print for monographs and most journals, though electronic full-text is also of growing importance for journals. Bibliographic databases are available through the Internet.

H. Multiple copies

Multiple copies are purchased for heavily used titles as requested by faculty or at the discretion of the bibliographer.

II. Acquisition Strategy

Materials are selected by the bibliographer for statistics from many sources including vendor slips, catalogs, flyers and faculty requests. The library maintains an approval plan for some of the major publishers. Some serial publications are received on standing order. The library also receives statistics journals on subscription. Retrospective purchases are made only to replace missing volumes or by faculty request.

III. Collection Notes

Subscriptions to new journals are added when requested by a faculty member. The faculty and students draw heavily on resources which support other disciplines.
