Subscription databases available to Virginia Tech EndNote users

Which databases can I access?

The databases below are from commercial vendors who allow direct connection to some or all of their databases via EndNote connection files or for which there is an available import filter or where there is direct export functionality.

See also the list of freely available databases from the U.S. federal goverment (PubMed, Agricola from USDA) and from libraries such as Addison from the Virginia Tech Libraries.

Vendors/Databases Notes What to do?

ABC CliO

Databases include:
  • America: History & Life
  • Historical Abstracts

  1. Run search, tag records.
  2. Click on Export Options. Choose Short Entry (brief record) or Full Entry (all fields).
  3. Choose in Output Type the EndNote option and click Export Records button.
  4. Click on Export to Citation Manager.
  5. Choose the EndNote Library that these records should import into.

ACM

Databases:

  • ACM Digital Library

No direct export. Must copy and paste bibliographic information into a text file - tedious process.
  1. Run search and click on title of a relevant article to see details..
  2. In the Tools and Actions section, click on EndNote as your displat format (other options are BibTex and ACM Ref).
  3. Copy and paste into a text document. Repeat for each elevant document.
  4. Use EndNote import filter to pull the results into an EndNote library. If yu are an ACM member, you can save time by saving your results to a binder (account and login required).

Blackwell-Synergy

Most but not all publications are available to Virginia Tech users. Unavailable articles are indicated by the message that an "online subscription or single article purchase is required to access this article."
  1. Run search, mark results by clicking on Highlight box.
  2. Download all highlighted abstracts to Reference
  3. Include eitherCitation or Citation and abstract and be sure the EndNote format has been selected.
  4. Check the Direct import box and click the Download references button.
  5. Choose Open or Save. If you select Open, the EndNote program should launch. Choose your library and the references should import. If not, select Save and then import using the generic EndNote Library import filter.

CABI

Databases:

  • CABDirect

Direct export to EndNote works imperfectly. CAB is working to fix problems (Nov 2005). Use this revised import filter.
  1. Run search, mark records, add to marked list.
  2. Select Full Record, Tagged Text, then save output as a text file.
  3. Use revised import filter available for download or edit the existing CAB Direct import filter.

CSA Illumina

Over 50 databases. See list.

Grouped in the categories of Arts & Humanities, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, and Technology.

CSA Database Names

Edit the import filter if data is not processed correctly. Use the full option to see all available fields.

Can directly export to RefWorks only. For EndNote:

  1. Run search, mark records.
  2. Choose format option: short (basic bibliographic infomation), full (all fields), or custom (you pick what to include).
  3. Save or email results.
  4. Use appropriate import filter.

Database Names

If direct export does not work, try saving citations in a format that can be uploaded to bibliographic management software, then use appropriate import filter.

  1. Run search, add selected records to folder.
  2. Click on folder icon when records have been added.
  3. Save to disk, click on Bibliographic Manager tab.
  4. Choose citations in Direct Export format.
  5. Click Save, choose EndNote Library, and references will import automatically.

FirstSearch

VT subscribed databases.

Can connect directly to some FirstSearch databases. See list of all available Z39.50 databases.

Z39.50 Configuration Guide

  1. Search, mark records.
  2. Click on Export. You can export to EndNote or RefWorks.
  3. Select your EndNote Library and then select the appropriate import filter. FirstSearch databases are listed in the filter category OCLC.

IEEE

Can export directly to EndNote

  1. Run search, mark results.
  2. Click on view selected itemsbutton.
  3. In the Download Citations box, choose output format (Citation or Citation & Abstract) and select EndNote, ProCite, RefMan option.
  4. Results will be imported into the EndNote library you specify.

ingenta - IngentaConnect - ConnectComplete

Can export directly to EndNote

Perhaps rename import filter as ingenta. UnCover was former service name.

The export excludes the abstract field. Ingenta' is contractually prohibited from distributing the abstracts for storage on other systems.

  1. Run search, mark results.
  2. Click on export (EndNote).
  3. Results will be imported into the EndNote library you specify.
    • If direct export does not work, use export (plain text) option, save results to disc, and import using UnCover [INGENTA] iimport filter.

Ovid

Databases include:

  • AARP AgeLine
  • Ei Compendex*Plus
  • INSPEC
  • Journals@Ovid Full Text
  • NTIS
  • PsycINFO7
  • Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory

Can directly connect to some Ovid databases. Login is not required. If connection file shows ? in user name and password boxes, delete them.

Database parameters

If direct export does not work, try saving results in either BRS/Tagged or Reprint/Medlars format, then select appropriate import filter.

  1. Run search, mark records, select fields to display or save.
  2. Click on Direct Export option in Result Format column in the Results Manager at bottom of the screen.
  3. Click Save and choose whcih software product to export to (EndNote, ProCite< Reference Manager, RefWorks).
  4. Click Continue button, choose Library and appropriate import filter.

ProQuest

Databases include:

  • American Periodicals Series Online

  • Historical Newspapers: Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, New York Times

If direct export does not wok, choose the EndNote compatible format and save the RIS file as a text file.The file downloaded from ProQuest is organized using the RIS structure.

  1. Run search, mark results.
  2. Click on the My Research tab at top of screen.
  3. Click the Export citations into EndNote, ProCite, RefWorks or Reference Manager link.
  4. You see the Export Citations page. Choose the direct export option.
  5. Choose your EndNote Library and references are imported automatically.

Research Libraries Group Databases

Available Databases:

aka - RLG - using Eureka search software

Selecting a software format from the start avoids problems with pop-up blockers later when exporting records.

If you do not select a specific bibliographic software in Preferences, a pop-up box lists all available applications from which to choose. The one you select remains open for the duration of the current session.

To export to bibliographic software:

  1. Click Preferences (on the blue bar at the top of the screen) to set preferred export format ( RefWorks, EndNote, ProCite, or Reference Manager.
  2. Click Apply Preferencesin the gray bar.
  3. From your records display, check up to 50 records to export, across more than one screen, and click the Export to bibliographic software link.
  4. Select a reference library for your exported records. and the program will import the records.

ScienceDirect

 

  1. Run search, mark records.
  2. Click on export citationsbutton.
  3. Select Content Format (Citations Only or Citations and Abstracts) and Export Format (RIS format).
  4. Click on the Export button.
  5. The EndNote program should launch. Pick you rlibrary and the results are automatically imported.

SilverPlatter

Databases include:

  • AGRICola
  • Biological Abstracts
  • FSTA
  • Mental Measurements Yearbook
  • The Philosopher's Index

WebSpirs databases available at Va Tech.

Login required for connection files.

  1. Run search, mark results.
  2. Choose output format: displayed fields, title only, citation only, citation and abstract, citation and descriptors, complete record, or choose specific fields.
  3. Click on the disk icon to “Save.”
  4. When the Save Records screen opens, click the radio button to “Export to Procite, EndNote or Reference Manager
  5. This will automatically load saved records into the EndNote program.

    To work, you must have previously downloaded the file SilverPlatter.enl and added it to your EndNote Filters directory.

ScienceDirect

Large collection of electronic journals from Elsevier Scientific.

As of Oct 2004, some fields do not import properly (EP - ending page).

  1. Run search, mark results.
  2. Click on export citations button.
  3. Choose RIS format and hit the Export button.
  4. Select EndNOte Library and results will import automatically.

SciFinder

Chemical Abstracts Service:

campus use only (includes VPN and inbound modem pool access)

  1. Run search, mark records, save results as a tagged .txt file.
  2. Choose the SciFinder import filter.

SpringerLink

The full-text of most articles is available, but some publications are outside the scope of the Virginia Tech Libraries' subscription agreement. As of May 2006, about 1200 of the 1500 publications in the SpringerLink collection are available.

  1. Run search, mark records.
  2. Click on RIS in the Export Selected Citations section.
  3. You can Open or Save the file download. Select Open, choose an EndNote Library, and the results are imported.

Thomson Gale - InfoTrac

Databases, include:

  • Computer Database
  • Expanded Academic ASAP
  • Gale Virtual ReferenceLibrary
  • General BusinessFile ASAP
  • General Reference Center Gold
  • Health Reference Center Academic
  • InfoTrac OneFile
  • MLA International Bibliography
  • National Newspaper Index

Thomson Gale connection files and import filters work very imperfectly, so you may need to edit or perform a lot of manual parsing.

For connection files, use this User ID: viva_vpi

  1. Run search, mark results.
  2. Click on Market items folder, then on Download.
  3. Choose format option: Plain text with bibliographic tags (Z39.80)
  4. Click on Download button.
  5. Use appropriate import filter.

Web of Science

ISI Citation indexes, which can be searched individually or together.

To choose specific fields to include in exported results, add records to Marked List and then select the output fields from the display of the Marked List Be sure the output format is set to Field Tagged before clicking on Export to Reference Software.

  1. Run search, mark results.
  2. Choose output format: Bibliographic Fields, Bibliographic + Abstract, Full Record, Full Record + Cited Refs
  3. Click on Export button, choose EndNote Library and results are automatically imported.

WilsonWeb

Databases include:

  • Art FullText
  • Library Literature

NOTE: The WilsonWeb import filter available at EndNote dated 3/23/06 uses long field labels and the direct export uses short field labels, which results in a failure to import records. Use this revised import filter instead. WilsonWeb has been notified of this problem, but nothing has changed as of 08 July 2006.

  1. Run search, mark results.
  2. Click on Exporting/Citing button.
  3. Select the Export to RefWorks, EndNote softwareoption.
  4. In the Download Record(s) into section, select The EndNote Filterand then click on the Export button.
  5. You are asked to Open or Save the file HWWilson.ris
  6. Use this revised import filter.
