Extended-campus is a synonym for distance education. These pages are primarily aimed at Virginia Tech students who are currently enrolled in classes (or thesis/dissertation credit) being offered at a remote site (e.g., Graduate Centers) or offered online and to faculty and staff working at a Virginia Tech remote site (e.g., Graduate Centers, Extension offices, ARECs, Equine Medical Center, etc.).

If you work or attend classes on the Blacksburg campus, then you are not generally considered to be an extended-campus user. There is one notable exception: If you reside outside of the New River Valley, then you are eligible to use ILLiad service to receive extended-campus document delivery and interlibrary loan services, which means library materials are mailed directly to your home address. See the services page for details.

The ILLiad service defines extended-campus users geographically. If your mailing address is outside the New River Valley counties of Montgomery, Giles, and Pulaski, then you are an extended-campus customer.

NOTE: Remote access to some of the Library's electronic resources - databases, journals, and selected Virginia Tech electronic theses and dissertations - is restricted to Virginia Tech faculty, staff, and students. Any individual can access these same electronic resources, however, from on-campus public computers on the Blackburg campus or at the Northern Virginia Center Resource Center in Falls Church.

Remote access is controlled by Internet address. Users connecting from computers that are defined as part of the Virginia Tech "domain" (on campus users or those connecting via a VPN ) have direct access to these resources via the Library's web pages, while persons outside the domain must take the additional step of authenticating their university status.

You are authenticated through a program called EZproxy that prompts you to enter a Virginia Tech PID and password.
