Torgersen classroom standard setup
The Torgersen Library classroom, located in room 3310 Torgersen, see map, offers 22 student stations and one instructor station: 2.8 GHz Dell PCs running Windows XP with 1 GB of memory and 16" flat panel monitors. This classroom can be reserved online. Instructors will want to note the Library Classrooms Policy. Each desk can accommodate only one student, so this classroom will comfortably fit 22 students.
We strongly suggest that Instructors make arrangements to test software and sample files (particularly if they are not part of the standard setup) prior to the class. The security settings on these computers will not allow the installation of software. Instructors can contact Classroom Management staff to determine when other classes are not scheduled and find time to test software. Classroom Management staff can also demonstrate the operation of the classroom projector and sound system. These preparations will lessen the chances of problems or surprises during the actual class.
Located at the Instructor's station are controls to three support systems. The remote to the Sharp projector is mainly used to turn the system on and off. The projector will show whatever is displayed on the Instructor's monitor (including ComWeb screens). Instructors who require attaching other computer equipment (like laptops) to the projector will need to make prior arrangements with Classroom Management staff.
A sound system and wireless microphone will enable students to hear instructors over the hum of the computers. Complete instructions for turning the system on and adjusting the volume are located directly in front of the sound system. Extra batteries for the microphone are also located nearby. We suggest all instructors use the sound system to improve the learning environment for the students.
The ComWeb system allows instructors to control the monitors of all stations in the classroom. Student monitors can be blacked out until needed. The Instructor's screen can be broadcast to all student monitors to ease demonstrations. Selected student screen can be displayed on the Instructor's station (and thus projected on the large screen up front). And individual student stations can be displayed on other student stations for collaborative efforts. Instructions for using the ComWeb system are located directly in front of the control pad.
The following software is installed as part of the standard setup for this classroom. Instructors who require additional software or sample files will need to give at least ten working days notice to Classroom Management staff to allow time for installation and testing.
