0:00
welcome to the Virginia Tech University Library series of short tutorials
0:04
on how do you summon someone is a brand new tool that we're just rolling out for
0:08
you
0:08
and you'll find it on the norse lovers home page
0:11
were addison's to be as matter fact he loves there are other tabs ass is still
0:15
there
0:16
as well as our database searching in journal searching taps but we put
0:19
someone in the front because someone combines the features
0:23
these on the three tabs into one single Google style search engine
0:26
as you can see by default someone will search for books
0:30
articles and other things but you can limit just search for books
0:34
or magazine or journal articles I'm gonna go ahead and do a brief search
0:38
here
0:38
for local food and now you can see that comes up with over two million results
0:43
I'm now the first thing I would like to point out is when it does a search like
0:47
this one has multiple words
0:49
local in foods it's not necessarily putting it together like freeze
0:52
it searching for ending has local in it like you see here
0:55
right local author I'm local you to Res
0:59
but it's not searching for local food together like it came in found in the
1:03
first
1:04
result so if you wanna keep these words together what you can do is you can just
1:09
put quotes around
1:10
must run out more time
1:14
as you can see that they're down my results quite a bit
1:17
55,000 but that's still a lot so we're gonna show you some things over here on
1:22
the left that will refine your search in these are called searching facets
1:25
first says which are restricted to just
1:28
items with full text online as you can see right here next to my results
1:33
it already says whether or not its full text but there'll be a lot of items that
1:36
don't have full tax
1:38
so by clicking this in a renowned just a little bit
1:41
you can also limit your articles from to only show anything from scholarly
1:45
publications
1:46
including peer review journals now the big thing you can do is excluding
1:50
newspaper articles
1:52
a lot of what you search for is going to possibly include
1:55
things are trendy or pop culture ish and those are the newspaper articles
1:59
so if we check this box I'm
2:05
killers that took out quite a few of our results and last
2:09
there is adding results beyond your lover's collection as it stands right
2:12
now I've written my search should be able to access to hear
2:15
Newman library but if you want to find more you could check this box and expand
2:19
your search
2:19
and then you could still gain access to those items but you'd have to go through
2:23
interlibrary loan department to do so
2:25
now I'm gone unchecked this
2:28
items with full-text online because that would take any books out my search
2:32
I'm and I wanna show you that as you scroll down here on the left hand side
2:37
you'll see any number
2:38
other facets you could use such as searching for only books and I know
2:42
right now by looking at
2:43
if I do this incomparable in nineteen results I could also
2:48
limited by library location I could limit subject terms: the publication
2:52
date:
2:52
the language there are lots of other options you can use here
2:56
to limit your search well that's it for this short tutorial on how to do basic
2:59
searches
3:00
there are some other tutorials we have that have to just book searching
3:03
as well as Hadoop marking and exporting your lists for citations
3:07
or just remember it later
