Instructional services for extended-campus users

The University Libraries' College Librarians can provide instruction for Virginia Tech affiliates who are at distant locations. It can be informal, individual instruction through means such as:

  • email
  • telephone
  • assistance in creating library assignments
  • specialized library handouts
  • access to subject oriented web pages

Or, it can be a more formal classroom setting such as:

  • setting up a two-way interactive video session (e.g. VTEL) for a class or graduate seminar
  • providing on-site instruction for a classroom session
  • setting up a chat session for a class
  • participating in listserv discussions or Q & A sessions

Instruction sessions for classes will be customized to meet the needs of each class. Information will be covered that relates to the course material or to a specific assignment within the course.

Resources covered can include:

  • electronic indexes / databases
  • online reference materials
  • full text online resources
  • Internet sites
  • Addison (Virginia Tech's online catalog)

Discussion can include:

  • the characteristics of specific subject literature
  • evaluating information
  • searching the Internet effectively
  • retrieving information located at the Blacksburg campus

To find out more about the instructional services available from the University Libraries, contact David Beagle, your Distance Education Librarian at 231-9231, or your College Librarian. David Beagle is also your contact for information on Off Campus Sign In or PIDs.

Information on how to obtain the hard copy of library resources at extended campus locations can be found at the Interlibrary Loan web site.
