Jan 14, 2009: Alumni Ability to Use Library Resources

I am [listed degree/area of study] student at the University of Tennessee - Knoxville working on my dissertation. During my literature search, I discovered Ejournals in your library that are not available at UTK. These journals relate specifically to my disseration subject. As a past student at VT, would it be possible to gain access to your library material? If there is a reasonable fee for access, I would be willing to pay this fee. (I received [degrees] ... from VT)

Sorry to say that there is no mechanism to provide remote access to restricted resources like databases and electronic journals to anyone other than currently enrolled students and currently employed faculty and staff. This is pretty typical with academic libraries. Alumni are normally expressly restricted from enjoying remote access in our contractual arrangements with publishers and online vendors.

On the plus side, however, you can physically walk into Newman Library and access the resources you want to see. There are no contractual restrictions on walk-in business and this library does not have the sort of password or ID access to electronic resources that you often see in private institutions. This is a land-grant school, so we try to be open to everyone – within our contractual obligations.

The library has good hours during the semester (101.5 hours). You might consider coming here some weekend. The library is open 9:00 am to 8:00 pm on Saturdays and noon to midnight on Sundays.

Blacksburg has considerably more hotel options now than you saw [when you were here]. If you are collecting hotel points, let me know which chains and I can send you some information about possibilities.

Your other option is to request the articles you need through the UTK interlibrary loan service. This assumes you have a list of known items or could derive one.

Dave Beagle, Reference Librarian

Jan 24, 2009: Option for Replacing Lost Book

Hi, I now have an overdue book that I can not find anywhere. If I were to buy that book and send it to the VT library - would that be adequate?

A replacement copy will be fine. We require an exact edition or a newer one. A $20 processing fee will be assessed to your account and a check may be mailed when the replacement is sent.

Brenda Pratt, Head of Circulation

Feb 26, 2009: Report of Missing Books

I am disturbed. Two recent books on a particular subject that interests me have disappeared. I asked for a search for the first one and after some time the library concluded it was "missing." I have purchased a copy for myself from Amazon. Now the second one was not on the shelf and I have requested a search. Both books published recently deal with US involvement in Middle East peace negotiations. The most recent is DS119.76.K87 2008. If this is also found missing it will indicate something serious!

Thanks for your note. Since it pertains to stacks management but with the additional inference that there may be censorship-by-theft and therefore have implications for collection development, as the person in charge of both it certainly falls in my area.

New books have a particular tendency to become fugitive, partly because the online catalog can't always perfectly track their quick passage from cataloging to new book shelf to regular stacks, with of course book trucks and shelving rooms as stops along the way, and partly because there are many people who want to see them, sometimes for checkout and sometimes for a quick browse after which they are put on a table and begin a passage back to the shelves that isn't as quick or simple as may appear. I haven't seen any evidence of concerted patron- or staff-driven efforts to suppress any part of our collections in my 30 years of involvement in one end or another of it so I would hesitate to put much stock in this small sample.
Best wishes,
Paul Metz, Director of Collection Management

I would appreciate a "desktop delivery" feature, where articles in the library physical holdings can be scanned on demand and delivered electronically (through systems such as the ILL electronic delivery feature) to patrons. The University I was at prior to VT offered this service for faculty and it was a great help.

Thank you for your useful suggestion, but due to limited resources we are unable to offer this service at this time.

Buddy Litchfield, Reference Librarian

Mar 22, 2009: Online Library Maps

It would be cool if you had an online floor map of Newman Library so that students could look up specific shelving sections and even bathrooms so they don't have to pack up everything because they are afraid they will be gone to long and end up packing everything up just to make a quick bathroom break. Thanks.

We do have this information available on our homepage, under Library Floor Maps. (maps)

Buddy Litchfield, Reference Librarian

We also link to them from the All site A to Z page.

Maps are also available in Addison. When viewing a book's record, the location label (such as Newman 3rd Floor or Newman Scripts) will be linked to a map that highlights the stacks or section where that item should be found. (We would show the stacks in more detail, but rows are shifted often to accommodate new purchases, and thus our maps would constantly be out of date.)

Robert Sebek, University Libraries Webmaster

March 29, 2009: Getting Library-Use Only ILL Materials "After Hours"

I'm trying to use a microfilmed newspaper ordered from ILL. I'm told at circulation that this is only accessible during ILL working hours. Since I do my research evening and weekends, I find this most inconvenient-it will be next Friday afternoon before I have a long block of time to devote to reading this newspaper. Could we please go back to the old system of making ILL material available off-hours, especially items that must be used in the building?

The ILL General Information, Delivery Options page under the heading "Where we hold items for pick-up" states:
ILL office, Newman Library (ILL) - You may pick up items In the ILL Office during normal business hours, which are Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. If you find it impossible to visit our office during normal business hours, please contact us to make special arrangements to pick up your items at another place and time.

This option hold true for "library use only" materials as well as books and articles. Contact Sharon Gotkiewicz. She will make arrangements to place the film at the circulation desk and leave it there until you are finished. She will request that they keep some kind of identification while you have the materials checked out. Also, please let her know when you are finished so the item may be returned to the lending library.

I hope this helps. Let me know what else we can do for you.
Bruce Obenhaus, Government Information Specialist

The tables holding the computers are mostly rather high. I do a lot of typing and the height of the keyboard on the tables is a problem. The kiosks across from the main circulation desk are right for me.

The Library has quite a number of public work stations scattered on various floors, with different seating configurations. If you search out other locations you might find some more computers that are at a more comfortable height.

Buddy Litchfield, Reference Librarian

Expand movie and music selection

We are working to expand our holdings in both music and film. However, it's important to note that our top goal is to support the research and instructional missions of the university, so that even with greatly expanded funding we will never be a substitute for Blockbusters or FYE.

For movies, we have generous ongoing support from a film-loving alumnus in Roanoke which we continue to use to build the collection of a film as an art form. Academy award, foreign, Sundance, and documentary prize winners, films much admired by the best reviewers (Ebert, Turnan, Travers in particular) account for most of our buying.

For music, we continue to give as much money as we can to the Performing Arts and Foreign Languages Librarian for her very informed purchase of what will always focus principally on classical music performance, with a respectful nod toward jazz, blue grass, and rock.

Thanks for writing.
Paul Metz, Director of Collection Management

April 6, 2009: Update of Library Website (from online comment box)

Library website should be reconstructed. It's not easy to search.

The library website will be undergoing a major change sometime this summer as we move to the university's new look and navigation. However, there are a number of search features currently present.

Often when patrons refer to searching the library's website, they really mean the library's catalog. An Addison search box is present at the top of every library webpage. We also have a link to search the actual library website at the top of every page as well, with results carefully weighted based on past searches.

There are many search engines located throughout the library's website, reflecting the wide variety of content the library provides. Easy access to the major search functions are located on the library's homepage, with quick links to search our large list of ejournal titles, online theses and dissertations, our list of databases, and subject guides if you are not sure where else to start.

Finally, we link to our Ask a Librarian service at the top of every web page as well, so if anyone has trouble locating anything, they should not hesitate to ask.

Robert Sebek, University Libraries Webmaster

Reply to this email and tell me how would be the best way to send them to you.

Your generous offer has been forwarded to me and I would like to get a better idea of which textbooks you have in your possession. We do not normally collect textbooks, but because of the age and family connections we might in fact be interested.
April 9, 2009: Possible to Change Closing Bell Sound? (from online comment box)

Is there any way to change bell sound announcing 30 - 15 - 10 minutes before library closing? This bell sound is very similiar to emergency warning / fire-alarm sound as well as very loud enough to disturb many patrons. Whenever it rings, most patrons siting @ second floor look at each other to figure out what's going on/whether it's some kinds of emergency situations. Thank you!

The bells tones are preset to the existing ring and can not be changed. Ringing the bell at 30 minutes and 15 minutes before closing and at closing is meant to be loud enough to get patrons attention. During the time that the bells are sounding, a Campus Security Guard is walking the floor letting patrons know that the building is closing. Our emergency fire alarm bell is quite loud and can not be mistaken. Any time a patron has a question about the bells they may ask at one of the 5 desks that are open until closing.

Brenda Pratt, Head of Circulation

Eliminate late fees.

Late fees are used as a preventative measure so patrons will return materials on time. Without this measure patrons would have no incentive to return materials in a timely fashion thus taking materials out of other borrowers hands. The library makes renewing materials simple as patrons can renew in person, on-line or by phone. Returning or renewing items on time does eliminate late fees.

Brenda Pratt, Head of Circulation

Currently there is no space allotted at the entrances for more racks. Please be aware that we have more racks located on the mall side of the library. When we complete the cafe/study in the former entrance on the mall side, we will plan to move those rack to a more convenient location near the entrances.

We are open 102 hours a week with extended hours during exams. Many of our resources are available online 24/7. Given our finite budget we must balance expenditures for services, collections, and physical facilities.

The doors of the men's restroom 3rd floor (especially the inner door) slam rather loudly. I don't sit in that area, but it surely must be a problem for the people who do sit there.

We will have our building preventive maintenance person check on the this troublesome door.
Don Kenney, Associate Dean for the University Libraries

April 23, 2009: Need More Outlets (from library suggestion box)

Not enough outlets for laptops.

We have attempted to address the problem of more outlets for laptops. This past summer we wired the 2nd floor commons area to accommodate more students and laptops knowing that groups of students would be using the area to work in groups. We also retrofitted a large number of the student study tables to accommodate 4 laptops at one time. These tables are located on the 2nd and 4th floors. It is difficult and expensive to retrofit an older building to meet growing demands for more and more outlets and modern technology. As our budget will allow we plan to increase the number of tables to accommodate more laptops on the other floors.

Don Kenney, Associate Dean for the University Libraries

We do try our best to meet the needs of our patrons and take your comments/suggestions seriously to provide our community with better services and resources. While we do occassionally receive suggestions that are not possible for us to provide or offer, as you can see from our archive, we do listen to comments and suggestions submitted to us.

The Library needs a copy of "The History of the World, Part 1, by Mel Brooks.

This request will be considered once the donor makes another contribution.

Paul Metz, Director of Collection Management

Please, get volume XVII (Milestones) of Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum - actually, update the CIL please!

At this time, we are not able to purchase the CIL collections. You might want to try seeing how much you need is already available online at the CIL site under the "resources" link. If you need to access more of the materials, you can request the needed volume(s) through Interlibrary Loan, or travel to a library that has the full collection.

Please note, each volume costs approximately $500, and with limited funds to cover all book purchases for a variety of departments, we cannot afford to put all money into one resource. I will talk to some of the Classics faculty to make an approximation as to how critical this resource is or will be to the studies taking place in that department.

Please also note, you can use the "suggest a purchase" request, as this is a much more effective way to get materials added to the collection than through an anonymous comment.

Bruce Pencek, College Librarian for Liberal Arts & Human Sciences

[The library should provide] Library cats to pet.

While this might be an interesting thing to try, and it may have calming effects on some patrons, the logistics of it would be beyond anything we would want to take on. Between feeding the cats, and providing litter boxes, I don't think these are proper activities for a University Library. There is also the problem of what to do with the cats when the Library is closed, and people with severe allergies. So while a nice idea, this is not likely to happen.

Buddy Litchfield, Reference Librarian

Have the ability to print from our own computers.

We are investigating this right now. The issue is that the wireless network is owned by another department on campus. We would first need to gain access to place wireless printers on their network. Then we will have to look to purchase or write some kind of software that would allow us to manage printing over a wireless network and receive compensation for those printouts printed. Not a difficult one, but a great deal of logistics involved. If it is possible, we hope to have answers and a possible solution ready by next fall.

Curtis Carr, Head of Library Systems

It will promote studying. I promise.

(3) Please be open 24 hours a day at least a week before reading day.

(4) The Library is great!!! I am a graduating senior, but I know that students would love for the Library to be open 24 hours a day.

We are open 102 hours a week with extended hours during exams. Many of our resources are available online 24/7. Given our finite budget we must balance expenditures for services, collections, and physical facilities. Our hours are comparable to many other research libraries our size. Additionally, the extended hours we stay open during exams seems to be adequate, given the number of students still in the Library at closing time.

Don Kenney, Associate Dean for the University Libraries

It'd be great if users could look-up their checkout history under "My Library Record" as well as see their fines. I'm always trying to remember good books I read a year or so ago that I want to check out again, but always have difficulty remembering the titles & authors.

The feature to view your past checkout history is possible with Addison but a library administrative decision was made to turn the feature off. The feature is an "all or none" feature so if it is on for you it would be on for everyone.

The reason for this decision was basically for the patron's privacy. If for some reason the history of a patron's past library use was questioned or subpoenaed by the courts, the library would have to give up this information. It was decided that the university did not want to be in that situation.

Hope this explains the reason to you, if you have questions give me a call.

Brenda Pratt, Head of Circulation Services

I just wanted to say how much I truly appreciate the ILL staff. They are fabulous! It would be a great benefit to my research if the circulation desk would be able to retrieve ILL items when the ILL office is closed. This used to be the case before the circulation desk moved. Not being able to retrieve ILL items over the weekend or after 5 p.m. can be a real problem, particularly if I'm facing a deadline.

Please contact the ILL office and let them know ahead of time and they will have your items held at the Circulation Desk.

Buddy Litchfield, Reference Librarian

The Lobby (second floor commons) would be much better if there were some paintings or something on the walls.

We are planning to put back the painting that was taken down for the new paint job we just had done. We are also going to hang some prints on the wall by the new enclosed marble staircase. Unless the paintings and prints are within visible site of public service points, they get stolen as we have experienced from the past.

Don Kenney, Associate Dean for the Libraries

June 8, 2009: TV on the 2nd Floor (library suggestion box)

The TV on the 2nd floor does not belong in a Library.

Libraries nation-wide, and all over the world provide access to information in all formats - we are in the information business. It is not uncommon to find news/media services in many academic libraries nowadays. Whether to support Communication, Journalism, or other similar programs, or just for general public consumption, news is a vital part of academics. Just as libraries provide access to newspapers, print and online, they also provide access to news channels so that users can stay abreast of current events.

A Couple of Examples:
Penn State University
Rutgers University

Newman Library is piloting the service through the fall semester. We deliberately chose a slow time to begin the pilot, the feedback you provide will be used to evaluate continuance of the service. Thanks for your input.

Lesley Moyo, Director of Research and Instructional Services

June 10, 2009: Nature Chemistry Subscription (library suggestion box)

It is vital that the library add Nature Chemistry to its online subscription package... and quickly...

Thanks for your suggestion. We will take it seriously and consider a subscription at our next review of new serials. But Nature is a real problem for libraries around the world. While it may seem self-evident that a research library should have all manifestations of Nature, the reality is more complex, and sadly expensive.

As you probably know, from 1869 until fairly recently, there was only Nature, occupying -- together with Science -- a unique place in the scientific literature. In the late 1990's, Nature started to spin off new titles, which now comprise three families: Nature research journals (named Nature (Name of Specialty)), Nature Protocols, and Nature Review journals. My read on their motivation for this is two-fold:

a. a very understandable sense that since they were of course rejecting many superb manuscripts, it would be wise to launch new journals for which they would be appropriate

b. greed on the part of this for-profit publisher.

For several years, we had access to Nature through VIVA, the Virtual Library of Virginia. As Nature promulgated new titles, VIVA tried to keep pace, but in 2007 they gave up. The consortium still pays for Nature proper, but we're on our own for the others.

There are already 26 research journals, and many titles in the other two categories. Our annual expenditures for Nature -- formerly zero -- have already risen to ca. $49,000 a year for the titles listed at the end of this note. We based on decisions on which titles to keep in large part on the VT usage observed during the VIVA years. At that time Nature Chemistry did not exist, but Nature Chemical Biology did, and had the second-lowest of the 21 titles to which we then had access.

I am sorry to have to add that in addition to their pricing, Nature has been an exasperating business partner, a poor communicator, and intransigent about terms. I know this not only from my work with VIVA but by the many emails I see on ICOLC, the listserv for library consortia worldwide. There's been a lot of talk in the academy about the importance of having the core journals in the hands of societies, as opposed to for-profit publishers. If one wanted an illustration of why this really matters, there would be no better case in point than the contrast between Science and Nature.

The current institutional rate for Nature Chemistry is $3,060, or over $250 per issue. It's too early to tell how well this new launch will do. But there has to be an end to this process somewhere. Thanks again for your note, and I do wish the tale were a more pleasant one.

Here are the titles we can currently afford. This list is at least as likely to shrink as it is to grow:

Nature biotechnology

Nature cell biology

Nature genetics

Nature immunology

Nature materials

Nature medicine

Nature methods

Nature nanotechnology

Nature reviews. Cancer

Nature reviews. Drug discovery

Nature reviews. Genetics

Nature reviews. Immunology

Nature reviews. Microbiology

Nature reviews. Molecular cell biology

Nature structural & molecular biology.

Paul Metz, Director of Collection Management

June 12, 2009: Chat Service, Missing Books, and Longer Hours (online comment box)

I love the library chat! It has saved me so many trips to the library! Good job and very good attitude by librarians on chat. The one thing Im upset about is a lot of books get stolen from the library and hope you guys can put a stamp on it and increase the library hours a little bit? Maybe dont keep the whole library open but just one floor?

Thank you for your comments about our Chat Reference. It is always nice to hear good things about our services.

Regarding the issue of missing books, I am sure we do have some loss due to theft. However, we do have a book detection system that prevents books from being taken out without being checked out properly. If you are experiencing not finding items on the shelf when you look for them, please alert the circulation staff or fill out a Library Materials Search Request form and staff will do a search for the item and notify you if it is found.

On your suggestion that we increase the Library hours, I must point out that during the regular school year we are open 102 hours a week with extended hours during exams.

Thank you for your comments.
Buddy Litchfield, Reference Librarian

June 26, 2009: DjVu not working (Online comment box)

FYI: the link for NetLibrary DjVu link does not work. Or at least it did not work for me.

netLibrary supplies ebooks in two formats: PDF and DjVu. For DjVu ebooks, they provide a link to download the browser plugin required to view this format--but the site they point to has not existed for months. I reported this problem through the netLibrary site and received assurance from OCLC (the company that owns netLibrary) that the link would be updated. Clearly this has not happened.

The library's netLibrary info page has a link to a live site for downloading DjVu plugins.

I have contacted OCLC again and asked why they did not follow through on their promised fix. Hopefully they will be more responsive this time.

Robert Sebek, Webmaster, University Libraries

Circulation also produces a number of brochures listing DVDs by genre (comedies, horror, westerns, etc) which allows for another way to find great films.

Buddy Litchfield, Reference Librarian

August 15, 2009: Art + Architecture Library doors

I am appalled, as a graduate of Virginia Tech, to find that our #1 Architecture program has connections with an Art and Architecture library whose doors have been put on backwards. Is there a way that the library doors in Cowgill Hall could be refitted to work correctly, as opposed to having most library patrons walking straight into a plate glass door?

Thank you for your comment. The doors to the Art + Architecture Library were designed to accommodate, with ADA compliance in mind, our patrons with disabilities. Although, as you probably noted, the entrance door has a "pull" handle, it was carefully calibrated to open inward with least resistance for wheelchair-bound patrons in particular. Thus a "Push" label was applied just beside the handle. This week, the door was modified to swing in both directions, and can be opened by either pushing or pulling. This should alleviate the problem.

Best regards,
Patrick Tomlin
Head, Art + Architecture Library

August 17, 2009: Redesign complaint (online comment box)

The new redesign for how to search for journals and databases is much more complex and difficult than the previous design. I am trying to create a walk through for my students and I just noticed that there is an error with the EBSCOHOST Databases. When you click on it, you get the following error: The requested URL /dsp/noproxy.html was not found on this server. Is this going to be resolved soon because I am trying to upload all my course documents in the next few days so that I can go ahead and open my course site.

First, I have fixed the No Proxy error. (You get directed to the No Proxy page when you try to access resources like databases or ejournals while not on the campus network. This is the same behavior as before the changeover. Be sure you make use of Off Campus Sign In or connect to the VT VPN so that you are recognized as a VT affiliate.)

You can still search for databases from the library's homepage, just as before. Switch to the Databases tab on the left side of the screen and enter a title or part of a title to search. For instance, enter "ebsco" to see a complete list of all the Ebscohost databases. You can also browse from this tab to view databases listed by subject (the Subject Guide pages), by the format of the contents, or our recommended general interest databases (including Academic Search Complete from Ebsco).

You can now also search for ejournals right from the homepage. The vast majority of ejournals have been entered in Addison, so a Title search in that tab will show both online and print access. The Ejournals tab searches just the electronic subscriptions and will pick up items not in Addison, which is mainly the non-full-text-journals like news wires.

The old pathways are still available, too. The Article/Databases link takes you to a page with all the many options for finding articles and/or databases. The Ejournals link gives you many options for searching for ejournals. And the Subject Guides link presents librarian selected databases from department-based subject lists.

If you are creating lists of library resources for students, I recommend taking a look at our Persistent Links page for some guidance on how to make sure these links work on and off campus and keep working for the whole semester.

If you have other questions or concerns (or find anything else broken--we're looking hard ourselves), please don't hesitate to send me a note.

Robert Sebek
Webmaster, University Libraries

The Library would be more conducive to learning if there was some music playing, preferably live music, something with guitars.

Two things, first, we do not have PA system.

I'm not sure if this is due to the change in the library web page, (the new one seems to be a bit easier to get around for beginners) but the VT Text links for EBSCO, WorldCat, and a few other journal databases do not work...this causes literature research to take much longer than previously...maybe i'm spoiled...
Could you all try to fix it. Thanks!

We are aware of the problem and are trying to fix it as soon as possible. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Buddy Litchfield Va.

Suggestion -- Can there be more outlet services for batteries?

We have attempted to address the problem of more outlets for laptops. In summer 2008 we wired the 2nd floor commons area to accommodate more students and laptops knowing that groups of students would be using the area to work in groups.

It would be convenient to have a printed version of the printing instructions on or near the public PCs. A map would also complement the printed instructions well. Or, have a recording of the instructions play out a loudspeaker every minute or so.

Thank you for your suggestions. I passed them along to our librarian in charge of signage, and he said he would look into it. He also said that he thought at one time there were printing instructions posted at each public workstation, but he does not know what happened to them. As for your suggestion of announcing the instructions over loudspeakers, I am sorry, but we do not have a public announcing system in the Library, and if we did, we probably would not use it for giving out printing instructions.

Buddy Litchfield
Virginia Tech Libraries

The study area on 5th floor which that I use seems a bit cold. I suggest that the air conditioning be off when the weather is cold already.

I am sorry, but the Library does not control the air conditioning in our building. The University decides when to change the air handling system from cold to hot in the Fall, and from hot to cold in the Spring. Also, it is important that we keep fresh air circulating through the building to keep mold and mildew from attacking our books. If you are sitting near the outside walls on the 5th floor, it is possible to turn down the individual units there. If you go to the Reference desk on the 4th floor, near the elevators, a Librarian can come up and turn down the units in the area where you are working.

Buddy Litchfield
Virginia Tech Libraries

There does not seem to be any way to get from the library home page to the search page for the image collection. I had to call the reference librarian to get the url for the image search home page.

We have two image collection databases: Imagebase (mostly Special Collection images) and Luna Insight (mostly Art and Architecture images).

From the homepage, all library web pages are accessible through the A-Z index.

So on the A-Z index, go down to the "I" range and either click the link to the Imagebase, or if you don't remember the name of the image search tool, click "Images, maps, news and other media" which will also give a link to the Imagebase and Luna.

You can also use the site search box at the top of every library webpage.
September 18, 2009: Medical survey regarding open access (online comment box)

I represent Dove Medical Press we are a relatively small open access publishing company that specializes in peer-reviewed scientific and medical journals that are made freely available to researchers, academics, professionals and organizations engaged in science and medicine. As you are probably aware open access is a relatively controversial concept, especially with the large subscription publishers such as Elsevier and Thomson Reuters. Open access publishers such as Dove realize that university libraries, such as yours at Virginia Tech, do not have infinitely deep pockets and cannot subscribe to all scholarly journals. We understand that budgetary constraints and the maintenance of an effective and efficient service are an increasingly difficult problem for university libraries to juggle with.

I am writing to you to ask four important questions:

1. Do you currently subscribe to, or promote, open access medical literature, (such as those published by Dove Medical Press)?

2. How are decisions made and by whom as to which journals are subscribed to by your University Library?

3. Are there any constraints upon you in choosing which journals to subscribe to?

4. Could you allow Dove to advertise their medical journals on your library intranet?

I realize that your time is precious however I hope you can spare a few minutes to answer these four questions.

Many thanks and best regards

Thank you for your correspondence.
1. Be open 24/7.

2. The library should be open 24/7, or at least have extended hours. We need a place to study. Most students stay up late studying. The library would be a good place to be able to do this. Almost all other colleges have late library hours. Why don't we? This is a huge school with lots of people. This is something VT should have. (Just look at UVA.)

3. Open 24 a day.

September 24, 2009: Power outlets (library suggestion box)

1. Suggestion -- Can there be more outlet services for batteries?

2. Provide more power outlets.

Please place signs in the Graduate Student study room designating it a Quiet Area.

Previously it was determined that the Graduate Study room would not be a designated quiet area (as noted in earlier responses to comments & suggestions) as there are places in there to study in groups or alone. However, after hearing this request numerous times, the library has opted to designate the Graduate Study room a quiet area and signs have now been posted to reflect this change.

Don Kenney, Associate Dean for the University Libraries

1. The quiet floors of the library should be better labeled. Students who are aware of the policy on these floors go there to quietly study. However, many are unaware of the quiet policy and disturb those who want a quiet area with their loud talking and group work. I know there are signs indicating that these are quiet areas, but they are not visible enough.

2.Suggestion: Place more quiet signs on the 3rd and 5th floors.

I scouted the third floor and counted five large poster signs indicating that the floor is a quiet study area and all are very visible.. I am not sure more signage is the solution. Some people would ignore them no matter how many signs we have. Let people know when you are bothered by their excessive noise and remind them that it is a quiet floor. We live in a university community and all have a responsibility to each other, and part of that is to remind each other of mutual responsibilities and respect.

Don Kenny, Associate Dean of the University Libraries

October 16, 2009: Recycling bins in library (library suggestion & online comment boxes)

1) I wish the library had recycling boxes for plastic bottles and aluminum cans. I have seen recycling containers elsewhere on campus, and have seen paper recycling boxes in the library. Is there some reason that this isn't possible?

2) Why isn't there a recycle bin for bottles and cans in the Library? There should be.

We do not currently have drink container recycling bins in the library because we are concerned that people would not empty their containers before disposing of them. Having containers of sugary drinks would attract insects and would grow mold, both of which would be very detrimental to our collections.

We are looking into placing these recycling bins in the new Study Cafe once it is completed. (We have one bin in the staff break room.) While we collect our paper recycling ourselves, custodial staff would be responsible for the plastic/aluminum recycling, so we need to coordinate with the facilities department to make this happen. Once we see how often they can be emptied, then we can take a look at adding bins to other floors.

Robert Sebek
University Libraries recycling coordinator

How many checkouts would warrant higher fees? We have fairly stiff fines now, I don't see how raising them will help.
November 8, 2009: Quiet floor signage (online comment box)

Greetings,I prefer to study in quiet environments; that's why I study on the third floor. However, groups of two or more consistently meet at a table on the third floor and talk loudly with no regard for those around them.

I want the library to be quieter.

I suggest putting up more signs, especially near the tables on the third floor, reminding people that the 1st, 2nd, and 4th floors are designed for group meetings.

Thank you for your comment regarding the noise level on the third floor of Newman Library. You are right in that the third floor of Newman Library is designated as a quiet study floor. We endeavor to enforce this policy through appropriate signage, and where possible, we enforce the policy by advising the noisy patrons to be quieter.

However, sometimes library personnel may not be available at hand to this. Please feel free to contact staff on the second floor (540-231-9232)and fourth floor (540-231-412)reference desks to ask for their intervention if the 'quiet' floor you're working on gets too noisy. With regard to your suggestion to increase signage, you will see additional signs put up this coming week about observance of noise policies.

Thank you again for your comments, please continue to inform us of how we might better support your research experience.
Best regards,
Lesley M.
November 10, 2009: Outlet request (library suggestion box)

More electrical outlets.

More large (group project) tables near outlets.

Good suggestion. We are currently exploring some options on the 4th floor for providing more group table areas, and make more electrical outlets available. We are planning on collapsing the 4 rows of reference material to the back of that area, and create a open space somewhat like the area on the second floor. If money is available we hope to provide more electrical outlets along the walls and down the columns, We also plan to explore the possibility of track electric outlets that can be pulled down from the ceiling, distributed through the whole area.

Buddy Litchfield
Reference Librarian

If someone is at the reference desk on the 4th floor, make them aware of the situation, and they will be happy to go ask the people in the rooms to vacate so a larger group can use the room. If there is no one at the desk, you are welcome to ask the people in the rooms to leave if there is only one or two people there, and you have a larger group. There is a notice on the doors to the rooms that state they are meant for groups of three or more.

Buddy Litchfield
Reference Librarian

December 2, 2009: Problem with reserve system (library suggestion box)

Do not allow reserves for more than 4 weeks!!! Force any Prof who reserves an item to renew it every 4 weeks. I hate the fact that 1 person can essentially hold a book or DVD hostage, weeks after they are finished using it. Rather than asking them to take it off reserve when they are done, force them to periodically renew it. 90% of the time when I contact the person who put something on reserve (making it unavailable to me) they say "Oh we finished using that weeks ago."

There are several issues involved with your suggestion, so let me take them one at a time. I am sorry that you are inconvenienced by our Reserve policies, but they have been in place for a long time and serve an important function for our faculty and students. To begin with most materials placed on reserve are meant to be used through out the whole semester. And the professor wants to be sure that his students have relatively constant access to the material when ever they need it. Then there is the time and effort taken to gather all of the material, process it, and place it on Reserve. If this process had to be repeated every 4 weeks, it would overwhelm our Circulation staff. Lastly, any materials on reserve are not unavailable to you.

Anyone, whether in the class or not, can check out Reserve materials. Yes, the time you can have the book, article, or DVD is less than the normal circulation period, but you can have access to it, just like any other student, faculty, or staff member.

Buddy Litchfield
Reference Librarian

Here's a quote from your comment archive:
October 30, 2009: Longer Torg bridge access (library suggestion box) Closing the Torg bridge/Library entrance after 5 PM is the worst idea anyone could have. I am very disappointed that the people in charge made such a horrible decision. Please open the door back up, because it's the right thing to do. Thank you.

I am sorry that you are inconvenienced by the closing of the Torgersen bridge/Library entrance after 5 PM. It was strictly a cost saving decision. Not having to staff the security gate at that entrance to the Library saves us over 50 hours of staff time each week. That frees up people that can be put to better use elsewhere in the Library.

Buddy Litchfield
Virginia Tech Libraries

---------------------------------------

Here's my question: how many students utilize the info desks on each floor, compared to Torgersen Bridge, when it's open 5pm-12am? I think you should seriously look into this. I've never seen anyone ask the librarians anything, and I've only asked them things twice in 4 and a half years, when the online database said a book was present, but it was not. All I learned from the librarian was that the book was probably stolen.

No offense, but I think people want to walk through a heated hall rather than go the long way to Torg in this weather, a lot more than they want to ask where the bathroom is. Bottom line: students need more hours, more computers, or outlets and internet access for their laptops. Nothing more!

Now that Google Chrome is beginning to allow the use of extensions for newer versions of its browser, would it be possible to work toward a LibX extension for Chrome as well? I think it would be worthwhile for students. Thanks.

Thank you very much for the suggestion. While this is a great idea, currently the LibX development team does not have the resources to create an extension for Google Chrome. Also, most of the extensions on Chrome are vaporware - released versions of Chrome don’t support them yet. However, we will keep this in mind as we move forward with additional developments of LibX.

Dr. Godmar Back and Annette Bailey are cc’d on this message. They are the creators of LibX.

Thanks again,
Kyrille Goldbeck
College Librarian for Natural Resources (& member of the LibX Team)

December 10, 2009: Construction noise on study day (online comment box)

I would really like to know why there is construction going on during reading day that you can hear clearly throughout the 3rd floor of the library. There are signs everywhere saying this is a "quiet floor" so we should not have to suffer though listening to hammering and drilling for hours on end during reading day. This is truly ridiculous that even the library isn't quiet! It is very distracting and obnoxious and quite honestly disrespectful to the students that are trying to spend this day studying in the one place on campus that is supposed to be silent.

I am very sorry that you were distracted by the construction noise in the Library today. I have been told that the construction activity on the first floor of the Library is just about done, and that the crew should only be doing quieter finishing work from now on. If more jack hammering does occur, it is hoped that it is only for a short duration. Unfortunately the University Libraries has no control over when the construction crew works, or how much noise they make. Again, I am very sorry that the noise affected your ability to study in the Library. If this problem arises again, I would suggest that you move to another area of the Library, were the noise is not so loud.

Thank you for the comment. We value your input. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to assist you in the use of our services, materials, or facilities.

Buddy Litchfield
Va. If you could give us a few concrete suggestions on how to improve our movie collection, it would be greatly appreciated.

Buddy Litchfield
Va. Tech Libraries

2. More Disney!!!!

Disney movies will occasionally meet our criteria and we are happy to buy them when they do. We also buy some other items of interest to children -- recently I ordered a few episodes of Sesame Street and we also own the truly wonderful Shelly Duvall set, Faerie tale theatre (Television program)

Thanks for writing.
Paul Metz

Extending library hours is a great idea. It's quiet in the library and the atmosphere is more study friendly than other study areas like torg in my opinion. the cubicle desks in the library are especially helpful in concentrating on work. I only study for important exams in the library. I, and I'm sure along with many others, benefited greatly from this. I only wish the hours were always like this.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. It is always nice to get feedback from students who appreciate the services provided by the University Libraries. If you have any additional observations or suggestions you would like to make, feel free to get back in touch.

Regarding the last statement in your note, we would like to offer more extended hours during the regular school year, but our operating budget just won't allow it. We are currently open about 103 hours a week during the Fall and Spring semesters, which is about average for a university library our size. Given the up coming budget cuts projected for the University, we just don't think that we can stretch our work force to keep the Library open later on a regular basis.

Thanks again for you input.

Buddy Litchfield
Va.
December 22, 2009: Problem with online Oxford English Dictionary (online comment box)

A search of your library database titles for "OED" provides a link to: http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/oed/. That site has changed, and I don't see the browsable on-line OED there. There is another OED site, http://dictionary.oed.com/entrance.dtl but I could not see a way to browse it.
Thanks.

We'll have to explore what happened to the OED provided by UVA (it's still listed in Addison though you are right that the link is outdated).

The version from the official OED site is not browsable, only searchable, but I found that the "concise" version we get from Oxford Reference Premium is browsable. I have added it to the database list (searching OED will bring it up). While it offers 240,000 words and phrases, it's not the complete OED, but I hope it meets your needs.

--
Robert Sebek
Webmaster
University Libraries, Virginia Tech
