Correct me if I am wrong (I'm not) but I think the previous comment about reading at the circ desk was supposed to be sarcastic. If anything, the presence of books at the circ desk would make the staff appear more professional. A desk full of people staring at computer screens is far less inviting than a desk full of library workers reading library books, in the Library. Just look at the reference desks. They read and don't have fewer questions because of it.
I think you need to take this issue up with the head of Circulation. Her name is Brenda Ptratt. Here is her phone number -- 231-9209, and her e-mail address -- bpratt@vt.edu. I am sure she would be glad to discuss this matter with you in person.

I can't get a Sage Online journal, Labor Studies Journal, to allow download of articles when I'm signed in from off campus. The Sage site asks me to login. Am I doing something wrong, or does the website need fixing?
The Journal Title Database doesn't list Sage as a source for this journal (we often receive access from a source other than the publisher).
It looks like Business Source Complete (from EBSCOhost) is the most complete version.

Yesterday I came to Newman Library at 6:40pm and was surprised that the door was locked. I called the university switchboard, and they transferred me to the phone number which would list the library's hours of operation. The recording included information from MAY, and only went up to August 13th. (And it indicated that the library's summer hours were until 7pm on Thursdays.) Please update your recording and/or ensure that the university switchboard directs to a correct recording.
As a tangent- I have an overdue DVD which I'm trying to return to avoid accumulating even more late fees, and the hours are frustratingly short.
Hi, you do not have any items on your library account nor do you have any fines. I'm sorry that you did not know the hours although we do have them posted on our home page and at http://www.lib.vt.edu/hours/Newman-Current.html
The phone hours should have been updated and we will look into that. Thanks for your information.

Most of the microfilm readers do not work. For example # 6 has no zoom and will not print. #2 will print one copy, but no more than one. I came in from out of town to use the new machine but some one had the machine tied up for several hours. It is a usb (sic) machine that will allow storage in a flash drive. In the interim I need a machine that will make copies. Why not maintain an appointment book upstairs for 2, 3, or 4 hour time slots. Then when patrons drive in they could be assured they will get on. Allow appointment by phone, with a penalty of some type for those who don't keep the appointment.
We are very sorry that you recently had difficulty using the machines in our microforms area, You will be glad to know that the library has just installed the new ScanPro machine that allows for high speed digital copying of all types of mircoform materials. A second one has already been ordered. We will monitor the use of these machines, and if there is demand, we will order a third. All the old machines will be retired in due course. In the future if you have any difficulty using the machines in our microform area please consult with the attendant in the area, or go to the help desk on the second floor.

Have a sign placed by the TV on the second floor, near the newspapers, that says (maybe) "The TV volume can be modulated by request at the Reference Desk on this floor". Thank you.
In order to keep the sound of the TV from disturbing nearby students we have purposely kept it to a low volume, that can be heard from the sitting area in front of the screen. This is thought to be a reasonable compromise that serves the needs of the people watching the TV, as well as nearby students who are not.
