  • January 8, 2010: Broken link for CD/DVD page (online comment box)

Just letting you know that the links to the Audio CD and DVD lists on this page http://www.lib.vt.edu/find/collections/index.html are broken. I can't find an alternative page on the library website where the full listsare available, so the only way to know if something is available is just to randomly browse via a search. It's nice to have the lists accessible, though, because sometimes you can find something new just by flipping through a long itemized assortment of what's available.

    Those links have been fixed.

There are several ways to browse these collections:

You can start on the Advanced Search screen in Addison, type two asterisks ** into the first search box and limit by Material Type to DVD, Audio CD, etc. That will perform a wildcard search and show all matching materials. The results can then be sorted by title or date of publication (newest items first). You could also include a keyword as part of your search to limit to a genre of movie or music.

You can search by Local Call Number and enter DVD or Compact disc (and possibly a starting number). Each DVD and CD is assigned a sequential number as they are cataloged, so higher numbers represent newer purchases.

You can also view newly cataloged items on the New Materials page linked on the library's homepage. Each month lists media materials (DVDs, CDs and VHS tapes); a link to older months is available on the Archives page.

  • January 11, 2010: Problem with Off Campus Sign In link (online comment box)

I can't sign in from the off campus user link.  Says invalid security link.  What's happening?  I need to get into JSTOR.  I use a Mac and connect to the Internet via Verizon.

    Thanks!

An upgrade to the Off Campus Sign In system has installed a new security certificate that is used to authenticate users' PIDs and passwords. The new security certificate will not be installed in your web browser by default; you will need to add this certificate to avoid warnings and error messages each time you log in.

In the Firefox 2.X browser, you will receive a warning that the security certificate is for *.ezproxy.lib.vt.edu, while you are really connecting to ezproxy.lib.vt.edu. You can OK this warning and continue. You PID and password will be authenticated securely.

In Firefox 3.X, you can add an exception for this security certificate. Then you will no longer receive a warning on login. Click the Add an Exception link in the warning window, download the certificate, and OK the exception.

In Internet Explorer 7.X, you will see a warning in the browser window. Click Continue to this Website and you will be authenticated securely.

If you have questions about this process, please use Ask a Librarian or contact a reference desk.

  • January 11, 2010: Bookmarks with due dates (library suggestion box)

Print check out receipts on bookmarks! That way they won't go straight to trash/recycle and we'll remember our due dates.

Why not just use the receipt as a bookmark, and toss it into one of our recycle bins when you return the book.

  • January 22, 2010: More computers (library suggestion box)

More computers would be nice. Not a lot, maybe 5-10 more.

Thank you for your suggestion. We always appreciate input from our patrons. While we would like to put more computers on the 4th floor, we are currently hampered by a lack of electrical outlets on the curved side of the buildings. We are working on a proposal to increase the outlets in that area, so as to provide connections for more laptops, and hopefully more Library computers.

  • January 25, 2010: Movie request (library suggestion box)

Get Boondock Saints 1 & 2, on DVD

We are basically buying the highest quality films for the long haul, films that reflect the issues of our time, and to some degree stuff that will circulate. Funds are limited however.

I'm not planning to buy Boondock Saints. Thanks.

  • January 25, 2010: Joining the library (online comment box)

I want to join your library, Let me know..thank you...

Joining our Library is relatively easy, as long as you live in the state of Virginia, and have a valid Va. State driver's license. If you meet these two requirements, just come to the Circulation desk in our library, you will be issued a Library card, and you can start using all of our in house resources.  You will still be blocked from using  any of our online resources from off campus, if you are not affiliated with the University, i.e, as faculty, staff, or student.

If you have any further questions, please get back in touch.

  • January 31, 2010: Should be able to fax for free (online comment box)

I am a student, and I need to fax something to the United States Navy about a potential commissioned job.  Cost to send 11 pages, $12.00.  Ridiculous.  I thought the $25,000 I sent the school a year would cover the cost of sending information over a telephone line.

The Photocopy center in the library is an auxiliary; that means it receives no funding from the university, tuition funds or otherwise. They must generate their own funds to cover supplies, maintenance and labor.

Fax prices were lowered a few years ago to be more in line with services provided at copy centers in town. They ended up being cheaper than Kinko's (when they were still downtown).

If our prices are a concern, you should inquire at your academic department (which does receive tuition funds). Your departmental secretary should have access to a fax and may allow you to send faxes for free.

    Thanks,
    Brenda Pratt, Head of Circulation
