Develop a larger selection of DVDs, more modern/mainstream films.
Thank you for your suggestion. We are always looking to expand our DVD collection, and are continuing to buy new films all the time. If you would like to suggest some films that we do not have, we would be delighted to hear from you. Thank you for your interest in our film collection.

I think the information regarding the "edition" of the following item needs to be corrected:
http://addison.vt.edu/record=b2029569~S1
I just checked the title page and it's definitely the 3rd edition. Is there a reason you think that it was listed incorrectly?

I apologize for the confusion; I am apparently wrong as I compared this item with a newer revised edition (http://addison.vt.edu/record=b2262302) except for I missed the fact that the latter is a revised edition.
Thank you for your time.
You would think they would have called the 2002 version the 4th edition...Sometimes I wonder what publishers are thinking. Still, thanks for writing in--people do find errors in the catalog from time to time and we do want to get those fixed.

I really wish there was coffee in the study cafe.
Well, you are in luck. We have signed a contract with a company that we hope will start providing coffee in the study cafe sometime in the early Spring semester.

Every elite college library stays open 24 hours a day. Virginia Tech needs to also.
I am sorry, but due to budget constraints it is not possible to keep the Library open 24 hours a day. We have however, worked with the University administration to provide a 24/7 study area in Torgersen Hall. The Torgersen Bridge is open all night long, as are all of the open spaces in the building. Only the offices and classrooms are locked at night. The University also provides two guards for safety purposes. Hope this gives you an alternative place for to study late at night.

Please make a binder that catalogs all of the CDs alphabetically.
It is possible for you to do this on your own now. Do an advanced search in Addison, and put two astrixes (**) in the search field, limit the material type to - Audio CD, and sort by title. This will give almost 5000 CDs, sorted alphabetically

Va. Tech Libraries.
I pay an incredible amount of money to go to Tech. Thus, it makes sense to provide hours on Friday and Saturday night that allow me to get the materials I need when I need them. Please help us students out who run into trouble on Friday and Saturday night. Twice this semester now, the only information available I can get is either at the library, or on some ridiculous online resource which I don't have access. I'm sure there are tons of other students who want to use the facilities at this time--so please make it available...at least until 11 PM.
We support a large and diverse clientele with many different service expectations. Within our funding framework, we aim for an appropriate balance of expenditures for collections, services, and physical facilities- all of which are important to our users. We get suggestions that we should improve our collections, or our services, or our spacessometimes all three at once! We try to do some work in all of these areas. In regard to service hours, we are open 102 hours a week, with extended hours during exams. We also staff branch facilities in CAUS, Veterinary Medicine, and at the Northern Virginia Center. Many of our resources are available online 24/7. Our hours and array of services compare favorably to similarly sized research libraries.
Thanks for your feedback.

Use the Dewey Decimal System.
I am sorry, but your suggestion is impossible. We have over 2,050,000 items in three branch libraries, our off campus storage building, and the main Library. Re cataloging, and remarking all of those items would be cost prohibitive. Plus, the Library of Congress clarification system that we use, provides more specific call numbers that allows us group like materials together more precisely. The vast majority of academic libraries Use the LC classification system for this reason.

Hanging signs indicating where the various stairwells are located around the Library would be very helpful.
Thank you for your suggestion. We have just finished placing location signs throughout the Library, indicating where you are in the building, on each floor, with clear indications of where the stairwells are located. If you think we need more signs in different locations, please lets us know, in detail where you think they should go, and we will try to accommodate your suggestions.

Have a larger selection of DVDs.
Thank you for your suggestion. We are always adding new DVDs to our collection. If you would like to suggest titles of DVDs that you feel should be in our collection, we would be glad to entertain purchasing them.

The noise from employees on the 5th floor is too loud. At 8:00 am, even when it is empty, and I am the only one there, I need it to be quiet so I can study. I have to wear headphones and earplugs to block the noise.
I am so sorry that you are having this difficulty on one of the quiet floors. We will remind Library personnel that they are supposed to be quiet on the quiet floors. Thank you bringing this problem to our attention.

Library, I find it difficult to navigate around the library website, in that when I go to a particular location, it is then often difficult to get back to a general menu. I find myself frequently gong to VT Home and then reopening the Library website and starting back there. One simple thing would be to always have a Library - Home link. Thanks.
There's a link to the library's homepage on every library web page (actually there's two).
You can use either the University Libraries link at the top of the left navigation bar or the University Libraries link in the header next to the Virginia Tech logo.

There needs to be a wireless router in the Study Cafe.
Let me first say that the library is not responsible for the wireless network in our building. That service belongs to the Telecommunications department of the university. They have placed wireless routers throughout the building and there is one that services the Study Cafe area.
CNS has informed us that each wireless router has a load limit. When that limit is reached users will see some degradation of the service and even some blockage, depending on the number of students accessing the wireless through that particular router. (I should say also that the staff shares these routers with the students.) Routers are placed at CNS's discretion to cover most locations of the libraries where students gather. The closer to the router will yield better service, and on some days you can pretty much figure out where the router has been placed. CNS assures us that we have an adequate number of wireless routers throughout the building. Any improvement in the system will come once the new communications systems has been acquired.

Please place alert signs for patrons to sign out of personal accounts on public computers.
We will look into placing a message on the desktop to remind patrons that these computers are public and that they will need to guard their personal information. It is the responsibility of every patron to guard and protect their personal information. Public computers are for accessing library resources. If a patron so chooses to access applications that require personal information, they enter and leave at their own risks.
