More tables on the group floors with outlets available please.
You are in luck. We have just finished a project to electrify over 30 new tables with multiple outlets, on the second, third, and fourth floors of the Library. This should greatly increase group study opportunities in our building.

Four notes from the suggestion box on the 3rd floor: Please fix the broken computers.
I am sorry, but I need more information. I checked the four workstations on the 3rd floor and all of them were functioning properly. If you are referring to computers elsewhere in the building I will need to know the numbers on the broken machines.

Two notes regarding Mac and PC computers not working on the Torgersen Bridge.
I am sorry, but the Library is not responsible for the computers on the Torgersen Bridge. The contact person for problems on the Bridge can be reached at 231-9228.

Keep the computers up to date.
The Library workstations are upgraded on a regular basis, in an effort to keep the software up to date. If you have any concerns about the maintenance of the Library's public workstations, feel free to contact Curtis Carr, Director of Library Systems (curtis.carr@vt.edu, 231-7889).

If it is alright can the particular guy at the photocopy on duty now stop reading through computer printouts, using the pretext that he is counting them. He literally lifts the print out more than half-way up. I have seen him do this many, many times. The others do not read your print out but this guy does. Thanks.
Photocopy employees need to look at the materials for many reasons. Not only is a page count necessary, but also the need to verify the quality of the print because of the high volume for that area. Many issues arise with the machines and the employees try to keep a close eye on the output. With that said, your concern has been noted and passed on to appropriate parties. Your feedback is appreciated.

I am sending you information about my book on rotating disk systems published recently by Springer Verlag in hopes it could be interesting for the teaching staff and students of your university, and you may wish to order it for your university library "Convective Heat and Mass Transfer in Rotating Disk Systems"
I am very grateful in advance for your time.
Thank you for your recommendation, but it was unnecessary. We have had your book online in our system for almost a year.

Hi,
I've been working on a lesson plan for my fourth grade class that explores different kinds of plants and trees. I was searching the web for some new resources and I came across your page [forestry subject guide]. It was a great help to me, and I thought I would share a resource I've been using for a while that you might like to add to your page. It's http://www.gardenbuildingsdirect.co.uk/Article/what-tree-is-it and it is a fantastic resource on tree identification.
Thanks, and have a good day!
Thank you very much for the link to this website. I'll probably add some of the individual links to the forestry subject guide, as I try to avoid using commercial sites. There are some really nice sources on here (Identify Tree by Common Name, and some of the ones for identifying trees by their leaves & fruit). I'll also plan on putting some of the more kid-oriented sites on our conservation subject guide, as this major focuses on K-12 education.
Thanks again for the suggestion, and glad our forestry subject guide was useful for you.

Carry more Playboy.
We cancelled it because I suggested we do so, even though some people balked. While some great articles, like the interview with Jimmy Carter's in the 70s, have been published in Playboy, for the most part it has not helped in the production of much academic scholarship. I was confronted with canceling titles that spoke to Virginia Tech's mission--or cancel some popular titles like this one (although I don't think it actually got that much use). I opted to cancel the titles that were least helpful to our overall mission.

I was sitting in the 5th floor of the library earlier tonight when it closed. The employee who was closing told my friend and me that the library was closed and shut off the lights and rushed out. We packed our bags and tried to access Torgerson Bridge through the 4th floor when the employee saw us again and began speaking to us in a very harsh, angry manner. I understand that he was just doing his job, but he was unnecessarily rude.
I appreciate your bringing this to our attention. It is very unfortunate that this incident occurred and we will follow through with the employees who were closing the library on Saturday evening. It is imperative that we have the building vacated when the library is closed, and while not an excuse for rude behavior, it does explain the urgency in which the staff needs to address these issues. Please know that your safety is our main concern and that safety is at risk when patrons are in the building after closing.

Thank you for fixing the 5th floor computers. Smart idea too!
Thank you for your comment. We are pleased that you appreciate the updated workstations on the 5th floor. If you see any other computers in the Library that need our attention, please let us know.

Today, 10.13.10, the wiley journal service is not working properly. I have attempted to access Veterinary Radiology and Ultrasound multiple times on multiple computers and all fail. This is not the first incidence.
The problem you have reported appears to be intermittent. I was able to get to several full text articles, but was denied access to a few others. I will report the problem to our Serials group, and ask them to look into it. I would suggest that you keep trying, as I was able to finally get full text access to several articles.

I heard back from serials group, and they had no problem with accessing this journal. If you can give me a little more information, I may be able to figure out the problem. Are you off campus? If so, did you sign in through the EZProxy sign in process? If you are on campus, are you using a wireless connection? If so, then sign in through EZProxy, and you should be OK. If you are in the Vet Med Library, they should be able to help you access the journal.
Let me know if any of this works for you. Get back in touch if you are still having the same problem.

I have just tested accessing Veterinary Radiology and Ultrasound directly and through Off Campus Sign In and had no problems. Do note that our subscription online is for 1996 and forward; older issues are not part of our online subscription.
Is there a particular issue or article that is causing problems? What route are you taking to get to VRU?

1. Increase the time between screen savers. It is annoying when reading online to be interrupted by a screen saver.
2. The screen saver kills me. Please make the time last a littlelonger before it pops up.
3. Please add 5 minutes to the screen saver time. It keeps shutting off as I do my work.
Thank you for your suggestions, we have a solution in the works.

If possible make the Library a little warmer when the wintery temperature drops for good.
Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately the Library has no control over the temperature in the building. It is all decided by the University, who controls the heat and air conditioning for the whole campus.

We already have it on DVD. It is just checked out.

Put a decent version of Microsoft Word on all of the Library computers, because MW 1999 isn't cutting it.
All Library Computers are running Microsoft Office 2007 or greater for some months now. If there is a system that has been compromised, please forward more detail information so that we may remedy the situation. Machine name, location, etc.

DVD Requests:
"exit through the gift shop"
"inception"
"snatch"
"lock stock and two smoking barrels"
"The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus"
"The Four Feathers"
"The Talented Mr. Ripley"
Dear student,
I will put in an order for these. In the future you might want to use our material request form at www.lib.vt.edu rather than use a suggestion box. This will ensure your request is processed faster.

Just want to make a comment about the library internet. The internet is ridiculously slow in the library, can you please have a look on that?
Hi, to what network are you referring? The library has 2 networks available for patron use. We have the campus wireless network available to be used by your personal laptop computer or mobile device, and the campus wired network where all public computers are attached.
If you were using the wireless network on your laptop, it depends on where you are situated in the library, the number of connections connecting through that access point and the speed of your laptop. We get fairly good reception from most places in the libraries. However, there are some spots and some days where heavy use will degrade performance. The campus wireless network support is aware of a congestion problem and are looking into resolving the heavy use issue.
All library public computers are attached to the campus wired network capable of 100mbps. At very rare occasions are these running slow due to distance away from the hubs and congestion on the wired network.
If you could provide more information the next time you are experiencing a problem, we may be able to give you more of a specific reason for why you are experiencing slowness.
For better problem resolution, please provide, network, floor, day, time of day, machine name, browser, and whether you are downloading or accessing some other application, from the web or from the desktop and your email so that we may respond to you. Or report the issue to a library staff member at the reference or circulation desks.
Thank you,
Curtis Carr
