March 18, 2009 – New books in Newman Library are displayed on a bookshelf located between the circulation and reference desk on the second floor. (Branches handle new books separately.) New books had been displayed there for a week, but will now be displayed for up to a month. The location of these new books will now be indicated more clearly in Addison.

Only books destined for the second-fifth floor stacks are displayed on the new books shelf. Books destines for one of the branch libraries, or other locations in Newman, such as juvenile or reference books, have not and will not be displayed.

Once a book has been cataloged, it will display with a status of Newly Cataloged for about 3 days. This accounts for the time required to label and process the book and then move it to a shelf. If you require a book with a Newly Cataloged status, please contact a reference desk for assistance.

Books to be displayed on the new books shelf will now be added to a reserves "course" so that the location will be displayed in Addison as Newman New Books Shelf for the duration it will remain on the shelf. The reserves designation will not affect the checkout period; checkout period will remain the same as if the book were located in the stacks. New books cataloged in the first half of a month will be placed into one reserves course; items cataloged in the second half of the month will be places in a separate course. Items will remain in the course (and on the shelf) until the beginning of the next half-month period; after this period, they will be reshelved in the stacks.

Items located on the new books shelf will not be shelved in any particular order. If you need assistance locating an item on the new books shelf, please contact a reference desk.
