Virginia Tech Libraries partner with SCOAP3 initiative

Jan. 30, 2014 – Open access continues to rapidly grow in importance within scholarly publishing. Interest in broadening access to information in the field of high energy physics (HEP) has led to a unique initiative, with the full support of CERN, called SCOAP3 (Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics). This partnership involves libraries around the globe working with publishers and learned societies to convert several key HEP journals to open access, all at no cost to authors. Nearly 400 articles have already been made available since the start of the program earlier this month. These will be included in the SCOAP3 repository which will launch in February 2014.

The repository will provide access to the full-text of all articles published under SCOAP3 in several formats, including PDF, PDF/A and XML. Articles are published under a CC-BY license and can be further disseminated. The repository will also make available the corresponding metadata, under a CC0 license. Metadata will include of course the article DOIs and the ORCID IDs of all authors, when available.

Journals included in the project include:

  • Acta physica polonica B
  • Acta physica polonica B proceedings supplement
  • Advances in high energy physics
  • Chinese physics C
  • European physical journal C
  • Journal of cosmology and astroparticle physics
  • Journal of high energy physics
  • New journal of physics
  • Nuclear physics B
  • Physics letters B
  • Progress of theoretical and experimental physics
  • Progress of theoretical physics

Articles from these journals will be fully searchable in Summon .
