Newman's new book shelf discontinued; strategies for finding newly acquired books presented

June 1, 2014 – Beginning June 1, 2014, newly acquired print books will no longer be shelved in the second floor commons area. New books will be sent directly to the stacks on the appropriate floor as soon as they are processed. New acquisitions display a status in Addison or Summon of Recently Cataloged, which indicates that the item was processed for the stacks within 48 hours.

If you have trouble locating a "Recently Cataloged" item in the stacks, use the Request button in Addison. Library staff will locate and pull the item for you and notify you when it's ready to pick up at your chosen library branch, just as we do for any available books

Our list of newly purchased print books will continue to be published. It lists items in call number/subject areas and is published monthly. You can also subscribe to RSS Feeds for the various categories of new books. Look for the RSS feed for this subject link at the top of each subject page. Once subscribed, your RSS aggregator or news reader software will automatically alert you when updated lists have been posted.

Users also have the option of setting up customized search alerts in Addison, where emails are sent twice a month listing new items that match specified search criteria. This procedure will allow a more fine-tuned list and timelier notification of new materials.

Similarly, you can subscribe to a Summon-generated RSS feed of newly available ebooks (since most ebooks are not added to Addison). Run a search on the subject area of interest, limit it to Items with full text online and Content Type: Book / eBook. Look for the RSS icon at the top-right of your search results. This feed will indicate whenever new ebooks matching your search criteria are added to our collection.
