Web of Science database now includes book and conference proceedings citations

We now have expanded coverage in the Web of Science: Citation Databases from Thomson Reuters . This database and it's three discipline-focused databases Arts & Humanities Citation Index from Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge , Science Citation Index from Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge , and Social Sciences Citation Index from Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge , have long included citations for journal articles from thousands of prominent journals. Now these databases also index citations of books and conference proceedings as well.

Each of these databases allow for cited reference searching that allows you to track a paper's reference backwards in time and how a paper is cited in more recent publications. They also offer extensive analysis and reporting capabilities on authors and institutions that appear in multiple citations.

Construction and shifting could cause disruptions in Newman this summer

This summer we will be renovating a portion of the first floor. Collections and services will remain accessible, but walkways could be temporarily obstructed. Please consider using alternative stairs and elevators to access areas of the first floor. We are also shifting collections throughout Newman this summer.

Web of Knowledge now provides two biology databases

We now have two new biology databases on the Web of Knowledge from Thomson Reuters platform (plus access to MEDLINE on that platform) for comprehensive access to citations in biology, agriculture, health, and medicine.

BIOSIS Citation Index from Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge indexes journal articles, conference papers, books and book chapters, and patents on all areas of life sciences including molecular and cell biography, pharmacology, endocrinology, genetics, neurosciences, and ecology. You can perform cited reference searches. 1926-present.

Zoological Record from Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge indexes citations, abstracts, and full text from journals, trade publications, magazines, books, conference proceedings and more in the biological sciences. You can find the first appearance of a species in the literature and track taxonomic and nomenclatural changes. 1864-present.

Data Citation Index now available

Data Citation Index from Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge indexes data sets and studies from open and closed repositories, covering the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. It provides detailed records about each data set, offers links to the raw, primary data when possible, and standardizes citations for this material. 1900-present.

DOIs available from the Center for Digital Research and Scholarship

The Center for Digital Research and Scholarship (CDRS) has licensed the EZID service to enable digital object producers (researchers and others) to obtain persistent Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for their digital content. CDRS Services will create and maintain DOIs for works that are added to VTechWorks , the university’s digital repository. CDRS does not charge for assigning DOIs

Journals search tab goes away after May 31

For many years, we have recommended using the Journal Title Database to find information about journals: direct links, coverage dates, vendor platforms, and links to information about these journals from UlrichsWeb - Ulrich's Periodical Directory . To facilitate these searches, we created a search form in the Journals tab on our home page and pages for our branch libraries. We are now planning to remove this tab and recommend using Summon in the first search tab to perform these searches. Despite having the Journal Title Database form labeled to search journals whose title begins with, many users attempted to use this form in other ways that would not give them the results they expected.

We recommend using Summon to find journals. Access to journal title searches (and other known item searches like databases, articles, ebooks, and DOIs) will continue to be offered through the Search menu available on the home page and every library web page.

Two statistical dataset databases from Data-Planet on trial

Data-Planet Statistical Ready Reference indexes statistical data from the Data-Planet repository of time-series data across all disciplines. Searches are against real-time data. Search results provide a cleanly formatted visual representation of the data, links to the underlying data, and contextual descriptions of the data source, indicator and dataset from which the indicator derives. Datasets can be downloaded in spreadsheet, SAS, SPSS, and XML formats.

Data-Planet Statistical Datasets indexes structured datasets from Data-Planet's massive repository. Data can be exported in spreadsheet, PDF, SAS, and XML formats.

Shifting of stacks will cause some disruptions in Newman

We will be moving a large portion of Newman Library's collections this summer. While the stacks are in flux, we recommend you use the Request button in Addison to have us retrieve materials in the affected sections to save you time and trouble. We'll locate the item and hold it for you at the second floor circulation desk. If you need an article from a print journal or conference proceeding in the affected sections, use our new Desktop Delivery service and we'll scan the article for you.

The numerous book carts and assembling of shelving will be noisy. Groups should plan on working in the Learning Commons space on the second floor or anywhere on the fourth floor. If you are looking for a quiet space, we recommend the fifth floor during May and June, and the third floor in July and August. We hope to complete all of this shifting before the fall semester begins.
