Construction and shifting could cause disruptions in Newman this summer

This summer we will be renovating a portion of the first floor. Collections and services will remain accessible, but walkways could be temporarily obstructed. Please consider using alternative stairs and elevators to access areas of the first floor. We are also shifting collections throughout Newman this summer.

We will be moving a large portion of Newman Library's collections this summer. While the stacks are in flux, we recommend you use the Request button in Addison to have us retrieve materials in the affected sections to save you time and trouble. We'll locate the item and hold it for you at the second floor circulation desk. If you need an article from a print journal or conference proceeding in the affected sections, use our new Desktop Delivery service and we'll scan the article for you.

The numerous book carts and assembling of shelving will be noisy. Groups should plan on working in the Learning Commons space on the second floor or anywhere on the fourth floor. If you are looking for a quiet space, we recommend the fifth floor during May and June, and the third floor in July and August. We hope to complete all of this shifting before the fall semester begins.

New process for requesting NVC material be delivered to a Blacksburg branch

Patrons needing material housed in the NVC Resource Center in Falls Church, Virginia to be delivered to one of our Blacksburg campus library branches (Newman, Art + Architecture, or Vet Med) can now use a new link in the External Links box on the Addison screen for that box. Use the "Blacksburg campus users can request this NVC item via ILLiad" link, log in to your ILLiad account, and submit the filled out form.

Getting materials from branch libraries and missing items just got easier

Having material delivered to and from Newman and the Blacksburg branch libraries (Art + Architecture and Veterinary Medicine) and reporting missing material just got easier as new functionality is added to Addison's request button.

Ask librarians questions via SMS text

You can ask Text (SMS) questions to a librarian by sending the message to (540) 986-4614. Messages sent during hours when the reference desks are staff will be answered quickly; other messages will be answered when we reopen.

Users with smart phones or devices with internet capabilities will be able to use the links we send. If you connect to the internet over your carrier's network (as opposed to using the Virginia Tech wireless network), you will need to use Off Campus Sign In to access restricted, subscribed resources. Very in-depth questions should be directed to our Ask a Librarian chat or a live phone call.

Bike repair kit available from Newman circulation desk

The Newman circulation desk now has a bicycle repair kit, containing wrenches, tire levers, a multi-tool, tube patch kits, a bike pump, and contact information for local bike shops for more extensive repairs. Included QR codes will connect your smart phone to online tutorials and videos. Additional repair kits are available at the Squires and War Memorial Gym information desks.

Interlibrary Loan offers scanning service for local print materials

Virginia Tech affiliates (students, faculty, and staff) on the Blacksburg campus may request scanned copies of:

journal articles
book chapters
papers from conference proceedings

from print materials located at Newman, Art + Architecture, and the Vet Med libraries, in addition to the Remote Storage facility.

The scanned files will be delivered in PDF format to your ILLiad account under the Electronic Delivery section, where you will be able to download and/or print the file. There is no charge for this service courtesy of the Access Services Department.

To place a request, logon to your ILLiad account and select the Blacksburg Campus Desktop Delivery option. Please allow 2 business days processing time; no request processing occurs on Saturday or Sunday.

This service compliments a similar service for extended campus users, who can have local print materials scanned and delivered to them as PDF (or have equivalent items delivered from other libraries)
