Open-access (OA) literature is digital, online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. ~ Peter Suber

The University Libraries is committed to promoting the value of open access and to providing Virginia Tech scholars with new open access options for showcasing their creative outputs. Virginia Tech raises the visibility of its research on a global scale when digital scholarship is made freely available online at no cost to readers. Sharing research and scholarship on the open web broadens its impact and creates a global readership. Providing access to everyone, not just institutions that can afford to purchase journal subscriptions, helps to inspire creativity, enable innovation and to accelerate the development of important new discoveries.

Locally, Virginia Tech Libraries make open access publications discoverable through tools like Summon and Web of Science, provide open access publishing support through the Open access subvention fund , and require article archiving by our own faculty through the LFA open access policy (PDF | 13KB) .
