By design, Port offers both market-leading, commercial software like NVivo, ArcGIS, and AutoCAD that are frequently used by professionals in the field, and also many free, open-source alternatives that are increasingly competitive. Test-drive both kinds in Port before you commit your own money and computer resources.

  • Image editing

    Port offers several image editing programs for both bitmap and vector images.

  • Media editing

  • CAD/Modeling

    Port provides commercial and open source software for CAD (Computer Aided Design), CAM (Computer Aided Modeling), and CAE (Computer Aided Engineering).

  • Data visualization

    Data visualization helps with the understanding of data by putting it in a visual context, so that we may see patterns, trends, and correlations.

  • Simulation

    Engineering simulation software models dynamic systems to explore behavior, make predictions, and find solutions.

  • Geospatial / mapping

    Geospatial analysis applies statistical analysis to data with a geographical or geospatial aspect. This software will be used in a wide variety of academic disciplines.

  • Statistical / quantitative analysis

    Statistical and quantitative analysis is fundamental in many research methodologies. These software packages work with small to large data sets, helping to organize, validate, analyze, reduce, and visualize the data.

  • Qualitative analysis

    Qualitative analysis looks at behavior and these software packages often work with textual and other non-numneric data.

  • Textual analysis

    Textual analysis tools can look at the frequency of terms and phrases, extract language from multimedia files, and code language for further statistical analysis.

  • Digital development

    Digital development tools include programming platforms for C++, Java, and other languages.

Port computers

  • Use of Port must comply with the Virginia Tech Acceptable Use Policy.
  • Files left on machines may be seen (and changed) by others; personal files and settings can be deleted at any time. Save your work to portable media and/or cloud storage and delete files from computers – protecting your research from loss and theft is your responsibility.
  • Port computers do not all have the same software. Users needing licensed software (nVivo, SPSS) have priority – please accommodate them.
