CIRCULATION

The library book-stacks are open to patrons to browse. Books and journals taken out of the library must be checked out at the Circulation Desk by presenting the patron's Student/Staff ID. Regular circulating materials are checked out via ADDISON, the University Libraries' automated check-out system, while special categories of materials such as unbound issues of journals, audio-visual programs, etc. are checked out by filling out a Special Permission charge-slip for each item. The Circulation Policy of the Main Library applies to the Veterinary Medical Library for regular circulating materials, but special category materials are subjected to the policies of the Veterinary Medical Library. A HOLD/RECALL request can be placed electronically for books that have been checked out to another patron. Renewal Request for books checked out to you can also be done electronically. In addition you can electronically update changes in your mailing address and phone number.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN

Materials which are not owned by the University Libraries and needed by Virginia Tech affiliated patrons can be obtained through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Virginia Tech affiliated patrons need to first register with ILLIAD (the Virginia Tech University Libraries Interlibrary Loan System) to use the service.

DATABASE SEARCHING

The Virginia Tech University Libraries System subscribes to over 210 electronic databases. Only a handful of these pertain to publications in veterinary and biomedical medicine. Most of these databases provide journal citations although some cite conference proceeding papers and other documents. A few of them provide free access but most of them are restricted to Virginia Tech personnel.

CURRENT AWARENESS

INGENTA SERVICE is an automated current awareness service that delivers the table of contents of journals directly to your e-mail box. With Ingenta, you can also create search strategies for topics of interest. Keyword or author searches result in a list of individual article citations. Anyone with a Virginia Tech User-ID may subscribe to the Ingenta service at:
