Circulation/Reserve has a wide range of collections that may be used by Virginia Tech students, faculty, staff, and Virginia residents.

Videos
The video collection consists of over 9000 items, encompassing both educational and more popular titles. Most of these are in the NTSC (VHS) format, but we have some titles in PAL (a format used in Europe and Asia) as well. Videos are searchable in Addison by title, actor/director, subject, and call number.
DVDs
We have a small but growing collection of over 1400+ DVD titles. DVDs are searchable in Addison by title, actor/director, subject, and call number.
16mm Films
The 16mm film collection consists of over 1200 titles ranging from such subjects as agriculture to mathematics and psychology to animal science.
Optical Discs
Circulation/Reserve has almost 200 optical disc titles (also known as LaserDiscs). Optical Discs are searchable in Addison by title, actor/director, subject, and call number.
Humanities slides
The Humanities slide collection covers topics from Roman art and architecture to Modern Art. The slide collections can be searched by title in Addison.
Video Encyclopedia of the 20th Century
The Video Encyclopedia of the 20th Century is a collection of optical discs containing speeches, news clips, and other visual images covering most of the 20th century (1900-1988). The index and discs are part of the optical disc collection and can be requested at the Circulation/Reserve Desk; the call number is Optical Disc no. 8. The index provides subject access to this large collection. A computer and optical disc station is set up to help users find information on the discs. These items do not circulate, but can be viewed at the 20th Century Encyclopedia Optical Disc station.
Compact Discs
The Library houses a growing collection of over 3000 compact discs.Compact discs are searchable in Addison by call number, title, and artist/composer.
Audiocassettes
We have a collection of over 500 audiocassette titles which encompasses music, interviews, poetry readings and more. Please note that we do not have a popular "books on tape" collection; these may be found at the local public library. Cassettes are searchable in Addison by call number, title, and artist/composer.
Phonorecords
The phonorecord collection (also known as albums) is located in the off-campus Storage Facility. Items from this collection may be requested by using Request; feature on Addison. Items are available for pickup within two business daysat the Newman Circulation/Reserve Desk or any of the Branch Libraries. Phonorecords are listed in Addison by call number, title and artist/composer.
Foreign Language Audiocassettes
Circulation/Reserve houses the Foreign Language audiocassette collection which is used to supplement the foreign language classes taught at Virginia Tech. These tapes may not be checked out, but they can be used in Newman Library or copied for personal use. Below is a list of the titles and number of tapes needed for a full duplicate set of the text tapes. Please bring tapes of the specified length (or longer).
Please allow 48 hours for duplication of foreign language tapes.

Microforms
Microforms are non-circulating photographic reductions of print materials produced in the interest of saving space,obtaining or preserving rare or heavily used materials, or providing duplicate copies. Newman Library has a microforms collection numbering near 6 million items, including prints of books, magazines, newspapers, and engineering & technical reports.
The Microforms collection has three formats:
- Microfilm is a roll of film. The microfilm section is characterized by YELLOW drawer labels. Microfilm is arranged by Library of Congress call number or by film number.
- Microfiche is a 3"x5" or 4"x6" flat transparent sheet of film. Microfiche is found in the BLUE labeled drawers. Microfiche is arranged by Library of Congress call number or by collection.
- Microcard is an opaque sheet of paper. Microcards are foundon PINK labeled shelves and drawers. Microcards are arranged by Library of Congress call number or collection.
Color-coded maps showing microfilm in yellow, microfiche in blue and microcard in pink are posted throughout the area. Hanging colored banners in the area also identify the three formats.
Readers and printers for all three types of microforms are available in Newman Library. Photocopies of microform images are free.
DigiPrint
The DigiPrint Screen Scan 3500 has the capability to scan and print images from a MicroCard. Images may be saved on a 3.5 inch floppy disk or printed on a laser printer. There is no charge for scanning or printing the images.

Microform Scanner With Email Capability
The library now has a Cannon 300 Microform Scanner available for use.The machine allows users to scan pages from microfilm or microfiche to save onto a USB drive, CD-R, or email to their account. It is not attached to a printer. Printing is still available on the traditional microform printers. The machine is located in the Microforms area on the first floor of Newman Library; instructions are posted by the computer. If you need assistance or would like more information about the scanner please ask at the Circulation/Reserve Desk.
Finding Microform Materials
To find microform materials, you can:
- search Addison
- consult the index to a particular collection
- or search the Microform card catalog which is located in the microfiche section.
If you have any questions interpreting indexes or information on Addison, consult a reference librarian at the first floor Reference Desk. If you have any problems locating a particular microform in the collection, please ask for assistance at the Circulation/Reserve Desk.
Please do not refile microforms. Place materials on the refiling cart in the Microform area.
