Circulation & Reserve Services
Circulation & Reserve Services is located on the first floor of Newman Library and is responsible for the circulation and return of both library materials and reserve materials. We provide additional services, described in our web pages, for Virginia Tech students, faculty and staff, as well as residents of the State of Virginia. All patrons wishing to check out materials must present a valid ID.
Any staff member can assist you at the Newman Library Circulation/Reserve Desk. Closing Procedures
Circulation/Reserve is open the entire time the library is. We ask that you listen for the closing bells each night.
The bells are rung at 30 minutes before closing, 15 minutes before closing, and the third bell signifies the closing of the building.

What is your ID Number?
This number is what frequently appears on your Hokie Passport or University Library Borrower Card. The number is used by the Libraries to create your library account and to checkout books in your name.
IDs accepted at University Libraries
To protect our patrons, we require that everyone checking out an item present a valid form of identification. The Libraries accept:
- Hokie Passport
- Virginia Driver's License
- Virginia ID card issued by the DMV
- University Libraries Borrower Card

You may obtain a University Libraries Borrower Card if you are a Virginia resident or if you are attending a Virginia college or university. You will need to present your Virginia Driver's License, Virginia ID Card, or your school ID card. A University Libraries Borrower card will be issued to you. Please present this card when checking out books or requesting any other transaction.
Patrons without proper identification may not checkout library materials.
What is a "branch"?
There are 4 branch libraries at Virginia Tech:
- Newman Library - the main branch
- Art + Architecture Library - in 107 Surge Building
- Veterinary Medicine (VetMed) Library - in the VetMed complex
- Northern Virginia Center Library - in Falls Church, VA
Materials that do not circulate
Some materials are meant for use in the library only and do not circulate. These include:
- Reference books (you will see REF before the call number on the spine)
- Current Periodicals (current journals, magazines, newspapers, etc.)
- U.S. Bureau of Census publications, maps, microforms
- Certain other materials usually labeled "Item does not Circulate"
Popular Reading Books (formerly Browse Books)
Popular Reading books, which are popular fiction and non-fiction, are located on a wooden bookcase near the first floor Circulation Desk of Newman Library. The books...
- have a call number of BROWSE, a letter, and three numbers (Ex: BROWSE A031)
- circulate for 21 days
- can not be renewed
- lat fees accrue at $1.00/day
- can be requested by placing a hold on the particular title that is currently checked out; but the books cannot be recalled.
- can be searched on Addison by the title or author
