Searching for Reserve materials
To access the materials currently on Reserve, you will need to use the Reserves feature on Addison.
Once you have found the listing for your professor, you may select up to 2 items to check out at a time.
Write down the call numbers of the item you need and bring them to the Circulation/Reserve desk.
A column in the catalog will indicate the length of time you can check the material out, either 2 hour library use only, 2 hours, 3 hours, 2 days or 7 days.
Helpful hint: If you don't know your professor's exact name, you can type the first letter of their last name (ex. C) to receive a listing of all the professors with last names starting with "C".
To view PDF files on reserve you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Renewals
Reserve items may be renewed a maximum of 3 times, with the exception of 7 day loan items, which cannot be renewed.
You can renew either in person at the Newman Library Circulation/Reserve Desk or by calling 540-231-6340. (To see renewal information for other branches/units, see their webpages.) You will need to provide your patron ID number and the reserve item number you wish to renew. You will be given a new due date and time. Fines will accrue for items renewed late at $1.00 per hour or fraction there of.
At certain times, no renewals will be allowed. They include:
- during Exam Week and Reading Day
- if a staff member has determined a time of peak usage
- if the item is in need of repair
Please note that if materials are not renewable, you will be fined if the item is not returned on time.
Fines
Fines accrue at $1.00 per hour or fraction of an hour per item; this applies to all reserve loan periods.
For example:
- if a reserve item is returned 15 minutes late or 59 minutes late, the fine will be $1.00
- if the reserve item is an hour and 10 minutes late, the fine will be $2.00.
Patrons may pay fines at the Cashier's Office or the Circulation desk.
Patrons may appeal Newman Library reserve fines by completing an appeal form available at the Circulation/Reserve Desk or submitting the online form.
Reserve fines at other branch Libraries (ie. Art+ Architecture Library, VetMed Library, or the Northern VA Library) may be appealed at that respective branch.
