Applications for student jobs in the library:
All applications for permanent student jobs are available on the last business Monday during the following months:
- Fall semester: September - November
- Spring semester: December - March
- Summer sessions: April - July
Student applications for summer employment
Student applications for summer employment with the University Libraries will be accepted Tuesday, May 27. Applications can be completed on any public computer in Newman Library whenever the library is open during this time.
To be eligible, students need to take three credits during a summer session, or if not enrolled in Summer, have been enrolled the previous Spring and following Fall semesters. However, you will be required to pay social security taxes if not taking classes this summer.
All applications are to be filled out using a public computer in Newman library. Each department within the library that hires students will search this common pool of applicants.
Hired students will need to present official documents to fill out required tax forms. These include your Social Security Card or Passport. Leaving these documents at home will significantly delay the hiring process.

Promotion and Continued Appointment Information
In a dynamic environment of increasing collaboration with collegiate faculty and expansion of library services to the academic community, the University Libraries at Virginia Tech seeks to appoint service-oriented, innovative and self-motivated librarians to the following newly created/existing library faculty positions:
- Head, Art & Architecture Library
- Education and Applied Social Sciences Librarian
- Science Librarian
These positions are full-time, 12-month positions on a Continued Appointment (tenure) track. The incumbents will be active library liaisons to their respective departments/colleges, and will join other librarians in ascertaining the instruction, information, and research needs of students and faculty in their respective departments/colleges, and developing programs/services and collections to meet those needs. The positions report to the Director for Research and Instructional Services.
