    Study spaces

Newman Library has a variety of spaces for you to study in. Find one that suits your need:

  • Group study floors

        Group study floor

    The first, second, and fourth floors of Newman Library have been designated group study floors. Large tables dominate these floors, though individual carrels are located in the stacks around the floors. 

  • Quiet study floors

        Quiet floor

    The third and fifth floors of Newman Library have been designated quiet study floor. Both floor feature study carrels by the windows on the curved wall. Public computers are located near the main elevators. The third floor has some tables on the inside of the curved wing if you need to spread out.

  • Graduate study room (416 Newman)

        Graduate study lounge

    The Graduate study room (416 Newman) is a space reserved for graduate students to study and relax. Access is limited through the Hokie Passport, which must be swiped before the door will open. (If your Hokie Passport does not open the door, contact the Graduate School.)

  • Group study rooms

        Group study room

    Group study rooms with conference-style tables and white boards are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Four are located on the fourth floor and two on the second floor. Each is equipped with a large screen monitor that users can connect to their laptop to practice presentations or to collaborate on a project with others

  • SCALE UP classroom

        SCALE UP classroom

    The SCALE-UP classroom, 101S Newman Library, is available as a study space outside of regular class hours: 7:00pm - 7:00am weekdays, and all day on weekends. The monitor control system automatically switches during study hours to allow users connect to the monitor closest to their table, using the cable in the center of that table. Swipe your Hokie Passport for access.

Mon-Thu: open 24 hours*
Fri: close 8:00pm
Sat: 9:00am - 8:00pm

* During 24 hour operation, a valid Hokie Passport is required to access or remain in the library between 12 midnight and 7:30am.
