Sometimes called simply "political theory," this subfield of political science traces its ancestry to Socrates. Political thought's normative, often speculative, focus on questions of justice and rights gives it a strong kinship to humanities disciplines such as philosophy and literature. In contrast, formal political theory attempts to model political behavior mathematically and owes much to economics.
