Basic guides and tools before getting started

Finding books and materials in Addison 

Keywords: broad/general terms found anywhere in the record; use as starting point to find information, then move to subject searches based on items returned of interest in your search.

Some keywords to try:

  • Fisheries management
  • Fish conservation
  • Fisheries water quality

Subject headings (specific classifications given to materials about their subject area): these are also called "controlled vocabulary" or "index terms" as these are assigned to materials that meet criteria for a specific subject area.

Using databases to find articles 

Broad databases to use (helpful to get started, or cover a wide variety of subject areas)

  • Biological Abstracts: Covers articles from life sciences research journals published worldwide
  • CABDirect: Over 8.3 million records in the life sciences, covering an international scope
  • CSA Natural Sciences: CSA Natural Sciences will search across 20 indexes and their subsets in all areas of the natural sciences (biology, ecology, medicine, plant sciences, etc)
  • Web of Science: Includes Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index

Policy related databases

  • EIS: Digests of Environmental Impact Statements: provides detailed abstracts of EIS statements. Use the "by title" search in step two offered in the Get VText option to check the catalog for access. May have to order throuh Interlibrary Loan to get a copy.
  • GPO Monthly Catalog: Catalog to U.S. government publications
  • PAIS International: (to search items pre 1972, search the PAIS Archive) Covers political science, government, international relations, law, economics, business, finance, and other social sciences.
  • PolicyArchive:(open to public) Summaries (and full text) on public policy topics from 220 think tanks, university research centers, and government agencies.
  •  Water Resources Abstracts: provides summaries on water-related topics covering the characteristics, conservation, control, pollution, treatment, use and management of water resources.
