How the new process works

  • The University Libraries no longer issues daily fines for most overdue materials. Equipment and reserves do, however, still incur daily/hourly fines.
  • Instead, most items will have a grace period during which you can return material after its due date without any penalty. This does not apply to equipment or reserves. An item's grace period lasts from its due date until the end of the period listed in the 'Account Blocked' column above.
  • If you do not return an item by the end of the grace period, your account will be blocked and you will be unable to check out or renew materials, including the overdue item. At this point, you may still return the item without incurring any fee and your borrowing privileges will be reinstated.
  • If an item on your account is not returned before the end of the period listed in the 'Account Billed' column, the University Libraries will assume the material has been lost and we will bill your library account for the cost of the item, along with a $20 billing fee and $10 processing fee.
  • Finally, if you do not return an item earlier than the day listed in the 'Bill to the Bursar' column your library fines will be transferred to the Bursar's Office and applied to your University Account.
  • Any unpaid fees on your account will prevent you from checking out new materials or renewing current checkouts.

The intent of this fine policy is to prevent patrons from quickly incurring fees, while also encouraging them to promptly return materials so that other patrons can access them.

If you have questions regarding our overdue policy, please contact the Circulation Desk at crculate@vt.edu or 540-231-6340.

Paying Fines

All fine payments must be for the total amount owed. Any fines that have been sent to the Bursar's office must be settled with the Bursar's office. All other library fines must be paid to the library using Hokie Passport funds or a personal check or money order made payable to Treasurer of Virginia Tech (cash and debit/credit cards are not accepted) in one of the following ways:

  • Online using the Fine payment form,
  • In person at the Newman Services Desk, or
  • By mail by sending a check or money order to:

    Circulation Unit
    560 Drillfield Drive
    Blacksburg, VA 24061

Appealing Fines

Patrons can appeal fines or any library materials on their account by completing a Fine appeal form. Forms can also be picked up and filled out at the Newman Services Desk on 2nd floor of Newman Library.

Fines cannot be contested once they are 60 days old or have gone to the Bursar's office.

To view your account, log into My Library Account.

Equipment will be inspected before checkout and upon its return. Borrowers are responsible for damage to and/or loss or theft of all components and are required to report any problems experienced with the equipment during the loan period to Newman Library Circulation.

You must return all equipment to the Circulation Desk at Newman Library; equipment cannot be returned to other branches or campus return bins.

Fines are assessed to the borrower's library account, and may result in restrictions on your library account and at the Office of the University Bursar.

  • When an overdue item is not promptly returned, you will be billed for the item's replacement cost as well as processing and billing fees.
  • Replacement charges will be reduced to the non-refundable billing fee upon the item's return.
  • You will be responsible for replacement costs of the equipment if it is deemed jail-broken upon return.
  • Computers may have security seals that should not be removed or tampered with while on loan. If the item is returned without the seal intact the borrower will be charged a $20 processing fee and may be responsible for replacement costs.

Please call 540-231-6340 for replacement prices and any other questions you may have.

Laptops and iPads are pre-loaded with a folder of sample files and applications, but users may sync additional data and applications, with the understanding that all data added by the borrower will be erased when the laptop or iPad is returned to Circulation. It is the borrower's responsibility to save files to a USB flash drive or other memory device.

Any additional applications or media purchased by the borrower, and loaded to the laptop or iPad, must be purchased by the borrower, and is not the responsibility of the Library.

Our delivery service, Book Runner, now delivers library materials through campus mail. Faculty and staff with a campus address and/or department code may have books and other items sent through campus mail.

To Request Items:

  • Find item in Addison, then click the green Request icon
  • In the "Pickup Location" drop-down menu, choose "Faculty Campus Delivery"
  • Select your location. Note: You may also use any of the on-campus libraries as a pick-up location.

Requestable Items:

  • Books, serials, scripts, juvenile books, and any book that is in the University Libraries’ regular collection.

Non-Requestable Items:

  • Books on display, DVDs, CDs, reserve materials, and unbound journals and magazines are not eligible for this service; you will still need to retrieve these items in person.

How delivery works:

  • Items will be checked out to your account just before we mail them. You’ll receive a receipt via email.
  • If you happen to select non-requestable items, they will be placed on the hold shelf at the Newman Library Circulation Desk for you to pick up. You’ll receive an email about that, as well.
  • Requested items should arrive within 3 to 5 business days. Campus mail service does not operate on weekends or when the university is closed.
  • If your items do not arrive within a week, contact Newman Library Circulation at crculate@vt.edu.

If we don't have a resource you need, we'll request it from another library for you. We borrow from a wide range of universities and research institutions within and outside the United States.

To submit a request, log in to our request system, ILLiad.
